‘People’s Champion’ – LeBron James’ Agent Rich Paul Draws Bold Comparison Between Lakers Star, Muhammad Ali

LeBron James' agent Rich Paul compared the Los Angeles Lakers superstar to Muhammad Ali, calling him the "people's champion.”

LeBron James is the only player in NBA history to play 23 seasons on the hardwood, redefining longevity. At 41 years old, James remains one of the league’s biggest stars. And off the court, James has built a massive global brand that transcends sports.

The four-time NBA MVP has spent over two decades under an intense microscope. Though the Los Angeles Lakers’ postseason run ended with a sweep by the Oklahoma City Thunder in the 2026 Western Conference Semifinals, James showed that he can still produce as a No. 1 option, and now all eyes turn to his free agency this offseason. While discussing James’ career, his agent Rich Paul compared him to legendary boxer Muhammad Ali.

Why Did Rich Paul Compare LeBron James to Muhammad Ali?

In the latest episode of the “Game Over” podcast, Paul opened up about his close friend’s evolving legacy. The Klutch Sports founder and James’ agent suggested that the four-time NBA champion has reached a level of cultural importance where winning or losing can no longer dictate public perception.

“I always looked at LeBron as more of what I would call the ‘people’s champion,’ like Muhammad Ali. Even when he lost, I feel like people really embraced him,” Paul explained.

Paul also talked about what returning to Cleveland and winning a championship with the Cavaliers did for James’ legacy.

“I mean, we were just having a conversation, and I was just like, this is the best situation…If you win one time in Cleveland, there’s nothing else to be done. Because he already had rings… No one can say you’re not a champion. But it is the idea of going back home, winning one, I thought that [was big].”

With four NBA MVPs, four Finals MVPs, 22 All-Star selections, a net worth of $1.4 billion, and the most points in NBA history, James has accomplished everything he set out to achieve. One could argue that he has transcended sports and become a global icon like Ali, although Paul was simply calling James the “people’s champion” based on the support he has received.

During the 2025-26 season, James averaged 20.9 points, 7.2 assists, and 6.1 rebounds in 60 games, while shooting 51.5% from the field. He continues to command unparalleled attention and respect, and now the basketball world is waiting to hear whether he’ll return for one more season and, if so, where he’ll suit up.
