How Quarterback Brendan Sorsby Fits With the Miami Dolphins

The NCAA has rejected Sorsby’s request for reinstatement of his eligibility for the 2026 season, a decision that could accelerate his path to the NFL through the supplemental draft. As a result, the Miami Dolphins may have an opportunity to add a high-profile talent sooner than expected.

On the “Locked On Dolphins” podcast Saturday, host Kyle Crabbs discussed Sorsby’s fit in Miami and offered a mixed evaluation of the quarterback’s upside and risks.

“I think he is a player that needs to add a lot more polish to his game,” Crabbs said. “He’s got some of the best raw throws on his resume of any of the quarterbacks in college football last year. He’s a plus athlete as a runner. He’s a really rocked-up, physical, prototypical-sized guy who can run. He’s a really compelling player. I think the Dolphins should certainly be interested.”

Sorsby finished last season with an 88.2 rating in the PFSN College Football QB Impact metric, ranking 10th nationally. He threw 27 touchdowns against just 5 interceptions at Cincinnati and had early first-round buzz in the 2027 NFL Draft cycle. His profile has been strong enough that he could become a rare case in the supplemental draft era, especially at the quarterback position.

However, Crabbs also cautioned about the cost and risk involved in pursuing him early in the draft.

“But it goes from the evaluation to the valuation. How do you weigh the risks?” Crabbs said. “And if you’re talking about a first-round price of entry to feel like you’ve got a shot at him, I wouldn’t be spending that- not with what the off-field developments are that have led him to the doorstep of potentially being in the supplemental draft. If I’m Miami, I’ve got so much to do. I don’t think you could justify taking that risk to go to that area. Now, would I put a bid in? Sure.”

However, Sorsby’s situation is complicated by ongoing legal and eligibility issues. In a filing on Friday, the NCAA urged a judge ahead of Monday’s hearing to reject his eligibility appeal, saying that granting it would create “destabilizing ramifications” and effectively make the NCAA “the first and only major sports league in America to allow an athlete to compete after betting on his own games.”

Court documents submitted on Friday by both Texas Tech and Sorsby included detailed allegations in an affidavit. They state that Sorsby wagered at least $90,000 since enrolling in college and transferred at least $60,000 to friends to place bets on his behalf. It was also alleged he made at least 2,900 bets during his time at Indiana, totaling over $30,000.

Sorsby also reportedly admitted to placing at least 40 wagers on Indiana men’s basketball, totaling more than $1,400. While at Texas Tech, he is said to have sent $5,000 to an individual who placed bets on NBA, MLB, and PGA events on his behalf.

In Texas Tech’s appeal to restore his eligibility, the school recommended only a two-game suspension. It also warned that if the NCAA imposes the maximum punishment, it could discourage future athletes from coming forward to seek help when they need it most.
