A scary moment at the 2026 IIHF World Championship has the hockey world anxiously waiting for updates on Edmonton Oilers defenseman Evan Bouchard.
During Canada’s quarterfinal matchup against the United States in Fribourg, Switzerland, Bouchard was knocked down after taking a dangerous high hit from Team USA defenseman Ryan Lindgren.
The incident immediately sparked outrage across the hockey community and raised serious concerns for both Team Canada and the Oilers.
Brutal Hit at 2026 Worlds Leaves Oilers Star Evan Bouchard Injured
The play happened just over six minutes into the opening period. Bouchard was carrying the puck into the offensive zone when Lindgren stepped up and caught him with a direct shoulder-to-head hit immediately after the release.
Bouchard dropped to the ice and remained motionless for several moments, creating a frightening scene inside BCF Arena. Trainers rushed onto the ice before eventually helping him off. He was later ruled out for the rest of the game.
Lindgren received a five-minute major penalty for an illegal hit to the head along with a game misconduct.
Reaction across the hockey world was immediate after Bouchard went down, with many focusing on the dangerous nature of the hit and the growing concern surrounding his recent concussion history.
NHL insider Frank Seravalli noted that the situation could be especially worrisome for Edmonton. “Pretty concerning for Oilers. Bouchard got rocked in the playoffs and sources said he experienced concussion-like symptoms last month,” Seravalli wrote.
Oilersnation.com’s Oily Since ‘07 account posted, “Oh god, let’s hope Bouchard is okay.”
Analyst Kevin McCurdy reacted angrily to the collision, especially considering Bouchard’s recent health concerns. “Stupid a** hit, and he’d just come off a concussion in the playoffs too, hopefully he’s ok. What the hell kind of nonsense is this?” McCurdy said.
Oilers Nation writer Baggedmilk also noted how high the contact was. “Oh man, this is bad. Super high hit on Bouchard,” he wrote. Former NHL player Jason Demers didn’t hold back either, calling it a dirty play by Lindgren. “Dirty hit by Ryan Lindgren. I hope Evan Bouchard is ok; that did not look good at all!” Demers posted.
After the game, Team Canada defenseman Morgan Rielly addressed the injury and emphasized how important Bouchard is to the lineup. “You don’t want to see guys go down. Obviously, he’s a very important player for us, a very talented player. We need guys to step up, take on more ice time and responsibility. We’ll be able to do that,” Rielly said.
While the injury cast a dark cloud over the game, Canada appeared to rally emotionally around Bouchard afterward, responding with one of its strongest performances of the tournament.
Although they failed to score during the lengthy five-minute power play after the hit, Canada completely controlled the rest of the game and shut out the United States 4-0 to advance to the semifinals.
Still, the victory quickly became secondary compared to concerns surrounding Bouchard’s health.
