‘Men Against Boys’ — Wayne Gretzky Sounds the Alarm After Montreal Canadiens’ Game 4 Loss to Carolina Hurricanes

The Montreal Canadiens entered Game 4 with Bell Centre buzzing, renewed confidence on their side, and a prime opportunity to even the Eastern Conference Final.

Instead, they skated straight into a Carolina Hurricanes team that looked sharper, more aggressive, and completely in command from the opening puck drop. A disastrous first-period stretch turned the night sideways in a hurry, leaving Montreal chasing the game while Carolina played with the poise of a legitimate Stanley Cup favorite.

This one-sided performance ultimately pushed Wayne Gretzky to deliver a brutally candid verdict on national television.

Wayne Gretzky Issues Damning Indictment As Hurricanes Dominate Canadiens in Game 4

Gretzky did not sugarcoat what unfolded at Bell Centre after the Hurricanes blanked Montreal 4-0 to take a commanding 3-1 series lead.

Speaking during the NHL on TNT broadcast, Gretzky described the matchup as “men against boys tonight,” pointing directly to Carolina’s structure, physicality, and defensive discipline.

The game shifted dramatically late in the opening period when Carolina exploded for 3 goals in just 2 minutes and 46 seconds. Sebastian Aho opened the scoring on the power play before Jordan Staal and Logan Stankoven added back-to-back goals that silenced the crowd and forced Montreal to chase the game early. Carolina never lost control afterward, as Frederik Andersen secured the shutout behind another composed defensive effort.

Gretzky focused heavily on the Hurricanes’ identity and the tone established by their depth players. “You could see a team that really believes they’re a Stanley Cup contender, that they really believe in the system they play,” Gretzky said on the broadcast.

He specifically praised Carolina’s fourth line for setting the physical edge early through puck pressure, board battles, and relentless forechecking.

“It starts with that fourth line, who he [Rod Brind’Amour] starts at the beginning of hockey games, and they set the tone to get pucks in deep, cycle, take the body, and pound. Then the skilled players go out there and do their thing,” Gretzky added.

The Hall of Famer also highlighted the Hurricanes’ blueline, singling out K’Andre Miller for his shutdown performance throughout the series. Gretzky said Miller was playing “as well as I’ve ever seen a defenseman play in the Stanley Cup Playoffs,” while also crediting Jaccob Slavin for maintaining Carolina’s defensive wall whenever Miller was off the ice.

Although Montreal struggled badly in front of him, goaltender Jakub Dobes still delivered one of the few bright spots for the Canadiens. He stopped 39 shots and prevented the score from becoming significantly worse as Carolina controlled possession for long stretches.

Montreal’s offense, meanwhile, generated only three shots in the third period and failed to create sustained pressure against Carolina’s layered defensive system. The Canadiens have now set an unwanted Stanley Cup Playoffs record for the fewest shots on goal over a 3-game span of a series with a mere 43 looks.

The loss marked a stunning swing in the series after Montreal opened the matchup with a 6-2 win in Game 1. Since then, Carolina has responded with three straight victories, including consecutive overtime wins before Wednesday’s shutout.
