The trade speculation surrounding Darnell Nurse has intensified following the Edmonton Oilers’ disappointing first-round loss to the Anaheim Ducks in the 2026 Stanley Cup Playoffs. With Connor McDavid entering the final two years of his contract, pressure is rapidly building on general manager Stan Bowman to reshape a roster McDavid himself described as “average.”
But amid growing trade rumors involving Nurse, one NHL insider is warning the Oilers against rushing into a risky blockbuster move.
Oilers Warned Against Wild Darnell Nurse Trade
To create salary cap flexibility for upgrades in goal and secondary scoring, moving Nurse’s massive $9.25 million cap hit, which runs through the 2029-30 season, is reportedly being seriously explored by the Oilers front office.
League insiders have suggested Edmonton could soon approach Nurse about the possibility of waiving his no-movement protection for the right trade.
But not everyone believes the Oilers can afford to move him carelessly. NHL insider Mark Spector pushed back strongly against some of the trade ideas circulating around Edmonton, warning the organization not to create an even bigger hole on defense.
“To me, it’s just imperative that if you think you’re trading Nurse, you can’t trade away a 22-minute defenseman, a penalty killer, an important guy on your blue line, and then say, oh, don’t worry, we’ll find the guy later on that can fill that hole,” Spector explained.
Spector argued that if Edmonton does move Nurse, the return must include another top-four defenseman capable of handling heavy minutes immediately. “You traded Nurse for better or worse, but you’re bringing in a second-pairing defenseman who can play 22 minutes and fill that spot,” he said.
He also dismissed the idea of trading Nurse strictly for younger forwards or future assets, calling that approach extremely dangerous for a team already struggling defensively.
“If we haven’t learned by now in this town that defending properly is the prerequisite to any kind of success, if we haven’t figured that out yet, trading Nurse for a couple of young forwards is the most asinine thing I could ever think of,” Spector added, referring to a potential package featuring Collin Graff of the San Jose Sharks.
One trade idea that does align with Spector’s thinking is the rumored swap involving Toronto Maple Leafs defenseman Morgan Rielly.
The proposed Nurse-for-Rielly framework has quickly become one of the most discussed rumors of the offseason, especially after both Edmonton and Toronto failed to make the most of their seasons.
From Edmonton’s perspective, the deal would provide some financial relief since Nurse carries a cap hit $1.75 million higher than Rielly’s. That extra cap space could help address other roster weaknesses.
However, the financial structure also complicates Toronto’s trade. Because the Maple Leafs would be taking on the larger long-term contract, Edmonton would likely need to attach an additional asset, such as a draft pick or a prospect, to balance the deal.

For now, it remains unclear whether the Oilers will seriously pursue moving Nurse this summer. But one thing is becoming increasingly obvious: if Edmonton does decide to make a blockbuster trade, the organization cannot afford to weaken an already fragile blue line in the process.
