Vegas Golden Knights Take Veiled Shot at Oilers Star Connor McDavid

The Vegas Golden Knights are heading back to the Stanley Cup Final after steamrolling through the Western Conference, and they made sure the hockey world stood up and took notice.

Their dominant postseason run came just months after Connor McDavid famously labeled the Pacific Division a “pillow fight” during Edmonton’s uneven regular season stretch. While the Oilers watched the playoffs from home after their frustrating early exit, Vegas kept piling up wins and tightening its grip on the conference.

This difference in postseason results soon turned into a pointed social media message that sent hockey fans buzzing around the league.

Golden Knights Fire Back at Connor McDavid’s ‘Pillow Fight’ Comment

McDavid’s March remarks about the Pacific Division came roaring back Tuesday night after the Vegas Golden Knights punched their ticket to the 2026 Stanley Cup Final. Shortly after completing a commanding 4-0 sweep of the Colorado Avalanche in the Western Conference Final, Vegas posted on X: “Guess the pillows were filled with bricks.”

The post was widely viewed as a direct response to McDavid’s earlier criticism of the division. Back in March, the Oilers captain openly admitted the Pacific lacked consistency compared to the rest of the NHL. “Obviously, we’re fortunate to play in this division,” McDavid said at the time. “A lot of teams are fortunate to play in this division. It’s a bit of a pillow fight right now.”

At the time, Edmonton sat near the top of the Pacific despite inconsistent play, largely because several division rivals were also struggling to gain momentum. McDavid’s comments showed the reality of a tightly packed standings race where teams continued trading losses without major movement in the playoff picture.

However, the postseason completely shifted that narrative. While the Oilers were bounced in the opening round by the Anaheim Ducks, who fell apart against Vegas in Round 2, the Golden Knights emerged as the clear powerhouse of the Western Conference.

Vegas eliminated the Utah Mammoth in six games, handled Anaheim in another six-game series, and then swept Colorado with disciplined defensive hockey and balanced scoring.

Tuesday’s series-clinching 2-1 win at T-Mobile Arena highlighted exactly why Vegas now controls the West. Mark Stone opened the scoring with a breakaway goal in the first period, continuing his strong return from injury after producing two points in Game 3. Carter Hart delivered another calm performance in net with 20 saves, while Cole Smith added a key insurance goal in the third period.

Vegas also leaned heavily on its depth throughout the playoffs. Mitch Marner leads the team (and the league) with 21 postseason points, while Jack Eichel has added 18. Pavel Dorofeyev and Brett Howden have combined for 20 playoff goals, giving head coach John Tortorella offensive production across multiple lines.

The Golden Knights will now face either the Carolina Hurricanes or Montreal Canadiens in the Stanley Cup Final. But before the next round even begins, Vegas already found a way to land one more shot at its Pacific Division rival, and this one definitely didn’t feel soft.
