Wayne Gretzky Makes Opinion Clear With Officiating Under Fire in Canadiens’ Game 3 Loss Vs. Hurricanes

Tensions are reaching a boiling point in the Eastern Conference Final after a controversial Game 3 at the Bell Centre ignited major debate over NHL officiating during the 2026 Stanley Cup Playoffs.

With regulation unable to separate the two teams in a tightly contested defensive battle, Andrei Svechnikov buried the overtime winner at 14:06 to give the Carolina Hurricanes a dramatic 3-2 victory over the Montreal Canadiens and a 2-1 lead in the series.

But once the game ended, the focus quickly shifted away from the score and toward the officiating controversy, with NHL legend Wayne Gretzky also weighing in with a clear opinion.

Wayne Gretzky Weighs In on Canadiens-Hurricanes Controversy

During the second intermission of Game 3, NHL analyst Anson Carter criticized what he viewed as inconsistent officiating throughout the matchup between Carolina and Montreal.

Carter pointed to several moments he believed favored the Canadiens, saying, “There was a missed call in the neutral zone where Taylor Hall got gang-tackled… And then that one call that was called against the Canes, I thought that Anderson was slashing way in God’s despair going into the offensive zone.”

He then asked, “Don’t you think the refs owe the Carolina Hurricanes a couple calls?”

Gretzky didn’t hesitate with his response: “I didn’t think so.” That short response instantly fueled even more debate online, especially after overtime featured one of the most disputed non-calls of the postseason.

The biggest controversy from Carolina’s 3-2 overtime win centered around an apparent missed elbow by William Carrier on Lane Hutson during overtime. Replay angles showed Carrier catching Hutson high along the boards, but officials kept their whistles down.

Moments later, Hutson turned the puck over under pressure in the defensive zone before Svechnikov capitalized with the game-winning goal.

Another major flashpoint came in the third period when Noah Dobson appeared to give Montreal a dramatic 3-2 lead. Bell Centre erupted in applause, but Hurricanes head coach Rod Brind’Amour immediately challenged the play for offside.

After a lengthy review by the NHL Situation Room in Toronto, the goal was overturned. Replays showed Montreal was offside by only a few millimeters, wiping away what looked like the biggest goal of the night.

The frustration among Canadiens fans only grew as Montreal managed just 13 shots on goal in Game 3 after recording only 12 shots in Game 2, despite both games featuring extended play.

All in all, Montreal managed only 25 total shots across Games 2 and 3 against the Carolina Hurricanes, despite the games lasting over 137 combined minutes, including overtime. Only two other teams in playoff history (1988 Boston Bruins and 1998 Washington Capitals) had similarly low shot totals over two postseason games.

The Canadiens didn’t lose Game 3 solely because of officiating, though. Being outshot 38-13 points to larger structural problems that Montreal must solve quickly. The top line featuring Nick Suzuki and Cole Caufield will have to lead from the front as Montreal looks to leave Bell Centre by tying the series at 2-2.
