The Edmonton Oilers’ goaltending picture is back in the spotlight after their playoff collapse exposed serious cracks in their defensive structure and goalie depth. Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl kept the offense humming, but when the games got tight, the team’s crease situation completely fell apart. And that’s putting it mildly.
With the Oilers’ management scrambling to stop the bleeding, trade buzz surrounding Detroit Red Wings prospect Sebastian Cossa is starting to heat up in a big way. The chatter hit another level after NHL insider Frank Seravalli pulled back the curtain on where Edmonton truly stands with the towering young goalie.
Frank Seravalli Explains Why Sebastian Cossa Keeps Getting Linked to the Edmonton Oilers
Cossa’s name continues to circle around Edmonton because the Oilers desperately need stability in net after a disastrous 2025-26 season. The team cycled through multiple goaltenders after moving Stuart Skinner for Tristan Jarry, but the gamble completely backfired.
Jarry struggled badly following the trade and posted an .858 save percentage with Edmonton, while Connor Ingram failed to steady the crease during the playoffs against Anaheim.
This instability has fueled speculation around Cossa, who carries strong ties to Edmonton after spending three seasons with the WHL’s Edmonton Oil Kings. The 6-foot-6 goalie also remains one of Detroit’s most intriguing trade chips because of the organization’s crowded pipeline.
Speaking on Oilers Now with Bob Stauffer, Frank Seravalli explained why Cossa’s situation has become a major talking point around the league.
“That would be goaltender Sebastian Cossa,” Seravalli said when asked about the #6 player on his trade board. “Obviously, he also has an Edmonton connection. I believe Cossa will be on the move.”
Seravalli also pushed back on social media rumors claiming Detroit had already established a firm asking price for the young goalie.
“I was incorrectly quoted from some publication somewhere that made its rounds on social media, saying that I had set an asking price or Detroit had set an asking price,” Seravalli explained. “I don’t think it’s gotten that far yet.”
The insider pointed toward Detroit’s growing depth chart as the biggest reason Cossa could become expendable. According to Seravalli, the Red Wings may have “over-seasoned” the former first-round pick while other goalie prospects climbed past him internally.
Detroit’s situation has become increasingly complicated because Cossa is no longer waiver-exempt entering next season. If he fails to make the NHL roster out of training camp, the Red Wings risk losing him for nothing. Meanwhile, prospects Michal Postava and Trey Augustine continue to improve within the organization.
Even with the speculation growing louder, Edmonton still faces major hurdles before making a move. The Oilers have roughly $16.48 million in cap space, but much of that flexibility could disappear quickly because of pending contracts.
