‘Are You F**king Kidding Me?’ — William Nylander Reveals Dumbstruck Reaction to Maple Leafs’ 2026 Draft Lottery

The Toronto Maple Leafs entered the summer surrounded by uncertainty after missing the playoffs for the first time in 10 years. Questions about Auston Matthews’ future, Max Domi’s injury setback, and sweeping front-office changes have already placed the franchise under intense pressure.

Then came a stunning twist nobody in Toronto saw coming as the Maple Leafs beat the odds to win the No. 1 overall pick in the 2026 NHL Draft Lottery. The shocking result left fans, executives, and even star forward William Nylander completely stunned, instantly changing the mood around the organization.

William Nylander’s Viral Reaction Captures Maple Leafs’ Draft Lottery Shock

Nylander could barely process what he was seeing when Toronto officially won the 2026 NHL Draft Lottery. In a behind-the-scenes offseason video uploaded to his YouTube channel, Nylander and teammate Matthew Knies were filmed watching a Toronto Marlies playoff game when the lottery results suddenly appeared on a phone screen inside their suite.

Nylander immediately thought the result was fake. “We won the draft lottery. Are you f**king kidding me?” he said while repeatedly checking his phone to confirm the outcome.

Knies looked just as confused, responding, “How is this not a big deal when we were getting one or two? I don’t know, I just got trolled too.”

Once the result became official, Nylander’s disbelief turned into excitement. “We did it… Oh my god. That’s so crazy. That’s insane,” he said while laughing alongside teammates. Part of the shock came from Toronto entering the lottery with only an 8.5% chance of securing the top selection.

The moment carried extra significance for the organization because it marked only the third time in franchise history that the Maple Leafs secured the No. 1 overall pick.

The lottery victory also dramatically reshaped Toronto’s offseason direction under new general manager John Chayka and senior adviser Mats Sundin. Most draft analysts now expect the franchise to select Penn State star Gavin McKenna with the top pick at the NHL Draft in Buffalo on June 26.

McKenna posted 51 points in 35 games during his freshman season at Penn State and is viewed by scouts as a franchise-changing winger with elite playmaking ability. Analysts believe his offensive creativity could immediately complement Matthews on Toronto’s top line and eventually fill the Mitch Marner-shaped hole.

Despite the excitement surrounding the draft lottery, uncertainty still surrounds the franchise. Matthews reportedly remains in “wait-and-see” mode regarding his long-term future, while Domi is sidelined indefinitely following complications from offseason surgery.

Coaching uncertainty and trade speculation involving core players have also created tension around the organization.

Even with those concerns, Nylander made it clear where he stands emotionally with the franchise. In the same video, he addressed speculation surrounding his own future and said, “I don’t want to go anywhere. I love Toronto, and this has been home for me for so long. And nothing would make me happier than to win here. So, I hope that one day that dream comes true.”
