‘What Was Delivered to Jim Harbaugh’ — Pete Golding Warned of NCAA Trouble Over Luke Ferrelli Tampering

With NCAA requesting phone records from Pete Golding and Austin Thomas, Joe DeLeone predicts a mere slap on the wrist for Ole Miss Rebels.

Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney didn’t hold back when he alleged that Ole Miss head coach Pete Golding blatantly tampered with star linebacker Luke Ferrelli. The college football world braced for impact. Now, the NCAA has officially opened an investigation, and the panic button has been firmly pressed in Oxford.

What to Expect From the NCAA’s Investigation Into Ole Miss and Pete Golding

Analyst Joe DeLeone is urging everyone to take a deep breath. Analyzing the news on his podcast “The Ruffino & Joe Show,” DeLeone argued that those expecting a catastrophic, program-altering hammer to fall on the Rebels are misreading the NCAA’s modern enforcement playbook.

“I don’t think that there’s going to be a vacation of wins,” DeLeone stated. “I don’t think that there is going to be anything as egregious as like a significant suspension, even though that that has been something that has been brought up and floated.”

“I feel as though that the punishment is going to be closer to that what was delivered to Jim Harbaugh when he was at Michigan, the very first layer of penalties that he received that were tied to the recruiting violations that he had.”

The comparison is strategically sound. When Michigan originally penalized Harbaugh for minor recruiting violations during the dead period, it didn’t initially involve the massive suspensions or postseason bans that critics clamored for. It was just a slap on the wrist.

According to DeLeone, the NCAA simply lacks the systemic leverage to make an extreme example out of Golding.

“I don’t think that the NCAA is going to come in here and swing a gigantic sword in order to vanquish one enemy to prove a point and say, ‘This is going to happen to the rest of you if you don’t get in line,'” DeLeone explained. “Because if they did that, I mean, every single program would have suspended head coaches… Every single program would have a suspended head coach.”

While Swinney’s camp painted a picture of egregious rule-breaking, Golding offered a completely different timeline. Golding revealed that the Rebels’ pursuit of Ferrelli started well before the Clemson drama.

The delay in Ferrelli’s signing wasn’t due to illicit backroom deals, but rather tactical roster management. Ole Miss wanted Ferrelli to fill the vital linebacker role, but the spot wasn’t open until mid-January when linebacker TJ Dottery transferred to LSU.

Now, investigators have requested comprehensive phone records spanning December 2025 through January 2026 for Golding, general manager Austin Thomas, and several personnel directors. However, the true test will be the severity of the NCAA’s appetite for conflict in the modern NIL landscape.

“If (Pete) Golding gets suspended or something crazy like that happens, which again I don’t think is going to come to fruition, I think that there’s going to be widespread panic across college football,” DeLeone concluded.

If DeLeone’s prediction holds, the NCAA will hand down a replica of the original Harbaugh penalty structure: fines, nominal recruiting restrictions, and a harsh warning. But if the forensic data on those imaged phones reveals something unprecedented, college football’s fragile transfer ecosystem could be turned completely upside down.
