‘Hope Max Domi is Alright’ — NHL World Concerned as Maple Leafs Forward Undergoes Surgery

The Toronto Maple Leafs came into the offseason expecting nonstop conversation about roster changes after a frustrating finish led to a major front-office shakeup. Instead, the spotlight has suddenly swung toward a new injury concern.

This unexpected development has added even more tension to an already pressure-packed summer in Toronto. As new GM John Chayka prepares to reshape the roster with more than $22 million in cap space, uncertainty surrounding a veteran forward’s recovery is becoming one of the bigger storylines hanging over the franchise heading into training camp.

Max Domi’s Surgery Update Raises Concern Across NHL World

As Toronto tries to turn the page on a frustrating season, another tough break has now landed on the organization’s plate. The latest concern centers around Max Domi, after the Maple Leafs revealed Monday that the veteran forward will be out indefinitely following complications tied to offseason surgery.

Toronto released the update through the team’s official X account, stating: “Forward Max Domi underwent offseason surgery to address an issue he played through during the 2025-26 season. Due to complications arising from the procedure, Domi will be out indefinitely.”

The organization added that Domi “will continue working with the club’s medical staff and will be re-evaluated at the start of training camp.” Neither the team nor Domi’s camp disclosed the exact injury or the nature of the complications.

The update immediately sparked concern across the hockey world, especially considering Domi appeared in 80 regular season games despite dealing with the injury for most of the year.

The 31-year-old finished the season with 12 goals, 24 assists, 36 points, and 95 penalty minutes while rotating between center and wing in Toronto’s top-six group.

Several NHL analysts and hockey personalities quickly shared their reactions on X after the announcement became public. NHL analyst Chris McCluskey reposted the team statement and wrote, “Woah, hope Max is alright.”

Hockey writer Karine Hains also reacted publicly, posting, “Shame, all the best to Max Domi in his recovery.” Meanwhile, Ladies Talkin Leafs, a podcast, shared similar support, writing, “Best wishes to Max Domi for a full recovery.”

Others focused on both the hockey and personal side of the situation.

Jeff Veillette questioned whether Toronto should have shut Domi down earlier during a difficult season, but also acknowledged the seriousness of post-surgery setbacks. Veillette wrote, “On the hockey side, kinda odd that he didn’t shut down earlier,” before adding, “On the human side, getting the surgery only to have complications really sucks and I hope he has a full recovery.”

The timing also creates another challenge for Toronto’s front office as it reshapes the roster ahead of the 2026-27 season. Domi has two years remaining on his 4-year, $15 million contract, carrying a $3.75 million cap hit.

If the recovery stretches into the regular season, the Maple Leafs could place him on LTIR to create additional cap flexibility under the new $104 million salary ceiling.
