‘Golden Knights Really Hate the Oilers’ — NHL Fans React as Insider Exposes Vegas’s Vendetta

The Edmonton Oilers were already catching heat after their early playoff exit, but their coaching search suddenly got a whole lot messier. While the front office looked for answers behind the bench, a familiar Pacific Division rival created roadblocks for them in what could’ve been a simple process.

That rival team is the Vegas Golden Knights, who are dominating in the playoffs after two wins in Denver and putting the Colorado Avalanche in a serious hole in the Western Conference Final. In the middle of their run, an insider just dropped an eyebrow-raising report about Vegas’ past dealings with Edmonton, and the story quickly lit up hockey fans across social media.

Vegas Golden Knights’ Old Dispute With Oilers Resurfaces

NHL insider David Pagnotta of The Fourth Period revealed on The Sheet that in the past, the Golden Knights prevented the Edmonton Oilers from hiring an assistant coach from within the Vegas-Henderson system.

According to Pagnotta, Edmonton initially received permission to interview the coach and later extended an offer, only for Vegas to reverse course and retain the coach under contract.

Pagnotta explained the timeline in detail, saying, “The Edmonton Oilers asked permission to speak with one of the assistant coaches within the Vegas-Henderson organization. They were granted permission. The interview took place.” He added that the Oilers later offered the coach a position before Vegas “denied that pursuit and held on to the contract.”

The report became more significant because it arrived during the ongoing Bruce Cassidy situation. Vegas general manager Kelly McCrimmon has blocked Edmonton from interviewing Cassidy for the head coach job. Cassidy still has one year remaining on his contract, giving Vegas full authority to deny requests from rival teams.

Pagnotta suggested the latest development is not isolated. “This is not the first time this has happened between these two clubs,” he said. “So I wonder if this is just continuing because they don’t want to deal with divisional rivals.”

This report quickly circulated across X, where several hockey personalities and fans reacted to the growing rivalry between the organizations.

NHL reporter Matt Wozniak wrote on X, “Man, the Golden Knights really hate the Oilers. I don’t recall another division rival putting so much effort into making sure their opponent doesn’t get an advantage, especially from a hockey ops position.”

His comment showcased a broader frustration among Oilers observers, especially after the NHL Coaches’ Association publicly criticized Vegas for blocking multiple interview requests tied to Cassidy.

Another reaction came from analyst Michael Menzies, who speculated about the assistant coach involved in the earlier dispute. “Would that perhaps be Rocky Thompson?” he posted while referencing the newly revealed story.

Others focused less on the mystery coach and more on the NHL’s handling of the situation. Oilers Daily reacted with a brief, sarcastic “Colour me shocked,” while Karman Gill added, “As usual, the NHL did not care.”

Meanwhile, Vegas continues to thrive despite the controversy surrounding the organization. Under John Tortorella, the Golden Knights have built one of the postseason’s strongest defensive structures while also recording four third-period comeback wins.

Their latest rally against Colorado puts them two wins away from another Stanley Cup Final appearance, even as criticism around their front-office tactics continues to grow.
