‘I Don’t Wanna See It Burned Down’ — Wayne Gretzky Refuses to Meddle in Connor McDavid’s Affairs With Oilers on the Clock

The temperature is rising fast in Edmonton after a crushing playoff exit pushed the Oilers deeper into win-now territory. With Connor McDavid’s future threatening to become one of hockey’s loudest storylines, speculation is flying nonstop about whether the superstar captain could eventually look elsewhere for the Stanley Cup success missing from his resume.

Every analyst seems to have an opinion, but Wayne Gretzky wants no part of the noise.

The NHL’s greatest ever recently made it clear he has zero interest in playing matchmaker or nudging McDavid toward the door in Edmonton, even as the hockey world keeps obsessing over the Oilers’ shrinking championship window.

Wayne Gretzky Keeping His Nose Out of Connor McDavid and Oilers’ Business

Gretzky was forced to address the growing conversation surrounding McDavid’s future during a recent appearance on The Pat McAfee Show, where he deliberately avoided fueling speculation about the Oilers captain potentially leaving Edmonton.

With McDavid now signed through 2028 on a two-year, $25 million extension, the pressure on Edmonton’s front office has skyrocketed following a first-round exit at the hands of the Anaheim Ducks.

The contract itself sent a strong message across the NHL. McDavid declined the opportunity to chase a record-setting salary and instead kept his cap hit at $12.5 million.

This decision gave general manager Stan Bowman some flexibility to strengthen the roster, preserve the core, and aggressively pursue upgrades. At the same time, the short-term nature of the deal created a clear deadline for the franchise.

Despite the nonstop outside chatter, Gretzky pushed back on the idea that star players need bigger markets or different cities to elevate hockey’s popularity. “I look at Connor, and talking with Connor, he truly loves playing in Edmonton,” Gretzky said.

He added that Auston Matthews also appears happy in Toronto and argued that modern television exposure has changed the landscape entirely.

“The world’s such a small world today,” Gretzky explained. “You can see every game on TV. I don’t think where you play now is the difference in selling the game or making the game bigger.”

The comments arrived at a critical moment for Edmonton. Following a shocking first-round elimination, the organization fired head coach Kris Knoblauch despite consecutive Stanley Cup Final appearances in 2024 and 2025. Bowman immediately launched a wide search for an experienced replacement capable of maximizing the championship window around McDavid and Leon Draisaitl.

McDavid’s extension structure continues to loom over every major decision. If the Oilers fail to contend seriously over the next two seasons, McDavid could enter unrestricted free agency in 2028 at age 31.

Pat McAfee tried recruiting McDavid to Pittsburgh during the interview with Gretzky, but the Oilers legend quickly skated past the conversation. “I think that’s a conversation that you guys have with Connor,” he replied before joking, “I kind of like my statue in Edmonton. I don’t want to see it burned down.”

For now, Gretzky appears focused on staying out of the middle while Edmonton races against the clock to keep its superstar fully committed long term.
