‘It’s Bad Karma’ — Golden Knights Warned Over Mexican Standoff Vs. Oilers Over Bruce Cassidy

What started as a routine coaching change has now exploded into one of the NHL’s biggest offseason controversies. The Vegas Golden Knights are facing growing backlash for refusing to let former head coach Bruce Cassidy speak with other teams, with even the NHL Coaches’ Association stepping in publicly to warn the franchise.

Now, NHL insider Pierre LeBrun has joined the debate, arguing that the Golden Knights may be hurting their reputation by continuing to drag out the standoff.

Oilers’ Bruce Cassidy Situation Continues to Spark Debate

With only eight games left in the regular season and the Vegas Golden Knights slipping in the standings, the organization stunned the hockey world by firing Bruce Cassidy. John Tortorella was quickly brought in as his replacement behind the bench.

But the controversy really began after the firing, as Bruce Cassidy still has one year left on his $4.5 million contract. That means, under NHL rules, any team hoping to interview or hire him must first get permission from the Golden Knights.

The issue escalated when the Edmonton Oilers and Los Angeles Kings reportedly reached out to speak with Cassidy about their coaching openings, only for Vegas to deny both requests.

NHL insider Pierre LeBrun did not hide his feelings about the situation. “I think it’s bad karma. I think Vegas should not be doing this,” LeBrun said.

According to LeBrun, several coaches around the league are unhappy with how Vegas is handling the situation and believe the organization is pushing ethical boundaries, even if the league technically considers the move legal.

At the same time, LeBrun acknowledged the difficult position Cassidy now faces. “The tough thing for Bruce Cassidy is that, you know, eventually they’ll let him, I guess. But what if the window passes with some of the great opportunities that are out there,” LeBrun added.

Vegas does have a practical reason for delaying things. The organization remains focused on its Western Conference Final series against the Colorado Avalanche and likely does not want additional distractions during a playoff run.

But as LeBrun pointed out, the longer this situation drags on, the more it could cost Cassidy valuable coaching opportunities.

The Oilers already moved on from Kris Knoblauch after reports surfaced linking the team to Cassidy. That left the team searching for a replacement during one of the most important stretches of the offseason.

If Vegas keeps blocking Cassidy talks into June, Edmonton may have to move on to other options. One name already connected to the Oilers is former Toronto Maple Leafs coach Craig Berube, who has reportedly interviewed with the team.

For now, though, the Cassidy situation remains unresolved, and the longer it continues, the louder the criticism around the league is becoming.
