As speculation surrounding his future continues to swirl, LeBron James has opened up about what his future could look like. The veteran will be an unrestricted free agent this summer, and is evaluating whether to retire, return to the Los Angeles Lakers, or sign elsewhere.
LeBron James Coy On NBA Future As He Weighs His Options
Even at 41, LeBron showed he is more than capable of holding his own at the top level. He averaged 23.2 points, 7.3 assists, and 6.7 rebounds during the postseason and helped the Lakers make the Western Conference Semifinals, where they were swept by the Oklahoma City Thunder.
With the Lakers’ season in the books, attention turns to whether LeBron will be returning for the 2026/27 season. There has been a lot of speculation about his future, with some reports claiming he could retire and others suggesting he could return to Cleveland for a third spell. The New York Knicks and the Golden State Warriors have also been mentioned as possible candidates for his signature.
On the latest edition of the “Mind the Game” podcast with Steve Nash, the NBA’s all-time leading scorer broke his silence about his future.
“I’m just taking my time. I haven’t even thought about it too much. I understand I’m a free agent and I can control my own destiny, if being here with this franchise for the foreseeable future or it’s going somewhere else. But I haven’t really even gotten to that point,” LeBron said.
LeBron made it clear that he has no plans to finalize his future plans before free agency kicks off in late June.
“I think at some point, up in June, late June, as July rolls around, free agency gets going. As we start to kind of get a feel of what my future may look like, if it’s continuing to play the game that I love – which I know I can still give so much to the game, and play at a high level – or if it’s not,” he added.

Asked what could influence his future plans, LeBron made it clear that he values winning above all else. He also made it clear that he will weigh his family’s thoughts before making a final decision on his plans for next season.
No matter what decision LeBron makes about his future, it will undoubtedly send shockwaves throughout the NBA. If he does decide to return to the NBA for a 24th season, there will be no shortage of options.
