Mario Cristobal and Miami couldn’t secure the national championship title in the 2025 season, but the Hurricanes saw players like wide receiver Malachi Toney exploding. That player development remains a big selling point for Miami as it continues to recruit elite prospects in the offseason.
How Mario Cristobal Uses Malachi Toney’s Blueprint to Keep Miami Commits Locked In
Five-star Miami wide receiver commit Nick Lennear is set to enroll early with the Hurricanes. He continues to draw strong interest from other programs, but he remains firm in his decision because of Miami’s track record of developing top-tier talent like Toney.
“I love the way (Miami wide receiver coach) Kevin Beard coaches his guys and developed his guys like Malachi Toney. That impressed me,” Lennear told On3’s EJ Holland.
Toney was a highly rated prospect from South Florida who committed to Miami over multiple national offers and went on to deliver a historic true freshman season for the Hurricanes in 2025. He closed his regular season by matching Miami’s single-game record with 13 receptions against Pittsburgh. He then surpassed both 1,000 receiving yards and 100 rushing yards for the season in the Hurricanes’ win over Ohio State in the CFP Quarterfinals.
Toney ended the season with an 86.0 score in the PFSN College Football WR Impact Metric, ranking No. 2 nationally. He also earned several honors, including FWAA Offensive Freshman of the Year, ACC Rookie of the Year and ACC Offensive Rookie of the Year, First-Team All-ACC (wide receiver), and AP All-America Second Team. Miami has effectively highlighted its ability to develop elite wide receiver talent like Lennear.
As for Lennear’s recruitment, Miami gained momentum after he visited Coral Gables to watch the Hurricanes’ season-opening win over Notre Dame. That momentum continued, and he later committed to Miami in March, choosing Cristobal’s program over Florida State, LSU, Syracuse, and Texas A&M.
Lennear will suit up for his senior season this fall at Miami Carol City High School after transferring there late last year. He played a key role in helping Miami Northwestern reach the state championship game in his junior season, where he caught six passes for 135 yards and a receiving touchdown.
Lennear is now aiming to carry that high school production into Cristobal’s program.
“I just want to put on for my home city,” Lennear told On3. “That’s really it.”
Lennear is the No. 3 wide receiver in the 2027 class, the No. 3 prospect in Florida, and the No. 16 player in the nation, according to 247Sports. He has a NIL valuation of $423,000, according to On3/Rivals.
Lennear is the sole wide receiver commit in Miami’s 2027 class, which has 13 commits and ranks No. 1 in the ACC.
