What’s Next for Dianna Russini After Mike Vrabel Controversy?

PFSN asked our NFL writers to weigh in on Russini’s future and whether she will work again in the industry.

Alex Kennedy: “I think Dianna Russini will have a hard time finding another gig at a major outlet since they will worry about potential conflicts of interest (or even just the optics and the appearance of conflicts of interest). However, I wouldn’t be surprised if Russini continues working in sports media independently by launching a successful podcast and newsletter (maybe on Substack or Patreon). However, this will be significantly harder if she can’t reactivate her X account and get her followers back. With that said, as soon as she decides to tell her side of the story, there will be a ton of people ready to listen.”

Dan Tomaro: “Russini won’t work as a full-time insider again because sources will have concerns about where their information is going. The next step will be a public comment from her about what happened. While it might not happen this season, she will likely be hosting a successful podcast by next year. Her knowledge of the league is strong, and she will still possess inside information. Ultimately, football fans just want insight into the sport; I don’t see how an extramarital affair will make her reporting less appealing, especially considering how many fans can overlook players committing terrible crimes as long as they perform well for a fantasy team.”

Jacob Infante: “I think Russini will get work in the football space again, but it won’t be as a traditional insider or reporter. Given her reputation now, no sports media organization should trust her journalistic integrity to break news. I do think she gets hired as an analyst or a talking head, though. She has obvious name value and is comfortable speaking on camera or radio, so I think that would fare well in a different role within the media industry. That said, she would have no credibility as a reporter or investigative journalist.”

Kyle Soppe: “I don’t think so. A podcast is always possible and other forms of content, but asking her to retain sources and credibility is a tough sell at this moment in time.”

Jason Katz: “Probably not. Journalistic integrity is everything in that line of work. I don’t know if she violated that and it may not matter. If the perception is that she utilized her status as a trusted reporter to benefit a particular NFL team, sources are not going to trust her with confidential information, making it impossible to do the job.”

Cameron Sheath: “Dianna Russini’s future as an NFL insider will likely depend on her appetite for it. It’s unlikely she’ll be hired by another big outlet or broadcaster anytime soon, but mainstream networks no longer run the media landscape in the way they used to. Kay Adams has made a success of her own show, as have a host of former players and network personalities.”

Terry Biggs: “Russini will find a home at Barstool or Dan Le Batard’s show. She will conduct a teary interview. However, her reputation inside the league is shot. She may become an NFL commentator, but this scandal is now her entire legacy.”
