The Indiana Fever are sitting at 2-2 after Sunday’s win over the Seattle Storm. Caitlin Clark recently hopped on Candace Parker and Aliyah Boston’s podcast to pay tribute to her Indiana teammate.
She compared Boston to a three-time NBA MVP who took the basketball world by storm a few years ago, and remains one of the best ballers to this day.
Caitlin Clark Compares Aliyah Boston to Nikola Jokić
“She reminds me of Jokić a lot. Like she can pass. She communicates well. She defends, she rebounds, she scores. But I think for us and the pick and roll specifically, I think we’re gonna get a better feel of when AB is gonna hard dive, when she’s gonna short roll, and then when she’s gonna pop,” Clark said.
The Jokić comparison is not as random as it might sound out of context. This is not the first time Boston has been likened to the three-time MVP. Stephanie White cited Jokić as a blueprint for how she wanted to use Boston. And the connection has only grown more relevant as Boston’s playmaking has become a bigger part of Indiana’s offense.
Candace Parker extended the comparison even further during the same episode, drawing a direct line between Clark and Boston and one of the NBA’s most celebrated duos. “This duo could be a problem and will be a problem for the league. I mean, that’s going to be like the Jokić-Murray pick-and-roll,” Parker said.
The framing puts Clark in the Jamal Murray role, which actually fits the way Stephanie White has been designing the offense around her off-ball movement this season.
Boston has three options when she sets a screen: dive hard to the rim, take a short drive into the mid-range, or make a pass out to the perimeter for a jumper.
The timing of the podcast appearance is notable given the injury concern surrounding Boston. She exited Friday’s overtime loss to the Washington Mystics in the third quarter with a lower leg issue and missed Sunday’s game against the Storm.
Indiana’s most recent injury report came back entirely clean, and positive signs emerged at Tuesday’s practice, which suggests she is on track to return for Wednesday’s home game against the Portland Fire. Clark spoke about the pick-and-roll connection as something still developing between them.
If the first four games of this season are any indication, the league is not going to enjoy watching what these two look like once they actually hit their stride.
