Trying to qualify for a major tennis tournament like the French Open is stressful, but things went way too far during a recent match. On Tuesday, Spain’s Pedro Martínez played against Japan’s Rei Sakamoto. After Martinez’s straight-sets victory, instead of a normal handshake at the end, the match ended with shouting and heated threats, forcing veteran chair umpire John Bloom to literally jump out of his chair to stop the argument before it turned physical.
Heated Pedro Martinez Challenges Rei Sakamoto to Fight After French Open Match
Heading into the match, the 29-year-old Martínez, who entered as the 24th seed in the qualifiers, was the clear favorite against the 19-year-old Japanese prospect. Despite Sakamoto breaking Martínez four times, the young Japanese player’s staggering 36 unforced errors proved too costly to overcome. After the match, as the players met at the net for the customary handshake, instead of celebrating his progression to the second round of qualifying, Martínez, visibly enraged, repeatedly confronted the teenager. Sakamoto tried to calm things down, but his words only seemed to escalate Martínez’s anger. The situation quickly spiraled into aggressive pushing and shoving.
In the viral clip, Martínez could be heard asking his younger opponent, “You wanna go outside?”

What prompted the altercation remains unclear, and neither Martinez nor Sakamoto has spoken about it. Verbal disputes are relatively common in tennis, but they rarely cross the line into direct threats of a physical brawl. Seeing the brawl, chair umpire Bloom abandoned standard protocol, climbing down from his chair to physically separate the athletes.
This is not the first time the Spaniard has lost his composure on court. During a Davis Cup tie, after securing an impressive victory over Holger Rune in a highly charged match, both players had physical and verbal run-ins with the crowd. The match included moments such as Rune hitting a wayward ball toward Martínez’s body and a subsequent dispute in which the Spanish team demanded a warning that could have resulted in a point penalty.

Also, during their highly tense first-round match at the 2025 Australian Open, friction built up between Martínez and Luciano Darderi over mid-match antics. While it did not escalate into a physical brawl, the post-match handshake was brief, cold, and accompanied by a fierce, verbal exchange of complaints at the net.
However, with the win, Martínez advanced to the second round of qualifying to face Britain’s Arthur Fery.
