Bianca Andreescu won the hearts of tennis fans around the world with a heartwarming moment of sportsmanship following her French Open qualifying match on Tuesday. The Canadian claimed a 6-3, 6-2 win over Daphnée Mpetshi Perricard in the first round of qualifying.

Mpetshi Perricard broke down in tears after the qualifying match as she missed out on the opportunity to qualify for her home Grand Slam. But Andreescu crossed the net to embrace her opponent and console her.
Andreescu also got the Roland Garros crowd at Court Suzanne-Lenglen to cheer for Mpetshi Perricard, who is regarded as one of the most exciting young talents in France at the age of 17. She is also the sister of ATP Tour star Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard.
“I’ve been in that position many times. Tennis can be so tough mentally. We’re all out here chasing the same dream, and sometimes you just need someone to remind you that it’s okay. She played with so much heart today,” Andreescu said after the match.

Andreescu, who won the US Open after defeating Serena Williams at the age of 19 in 2019, knows all about the highs and lows of tennis. The Ontario native has faced several hurdles due to injury problems over the years, but continues to grind it out in a bid to return to the top level. She is currently ranked 160th in the WTA Rankings and has enjoyed success on the ITF Tour over the last 12 months.
That success has helped her find some confidence, and she has shown glimpses of her quality on the WTA Tour in recent weeks.
The 25-year-old delivered a strong performance against Mpetshi Perricard on Tuesday, breaking her opponent’s serve 5 times while saving 7 break-point opportunities. She also landed her first serve 75% of the time and fired 3 aces en route to a dominant win.

Next up for Andreescu in her bid to make it through French Open qualifying is a second-round clash against Viktória Hrunčáková. The Slovakian claimed a 6-0, 7-6 win over Canada’s Katherine Sebov on Tuesday and is ranked 224th in women’s singles.
Andreescu has had some success at the French Open in recent years, making the third round in both 2023 and 2024. She will now have her sights set on making her way through qualifying and reaching the main draw of a Grand Slam for the first time since the 2024 US Open.
