Madison Keys Suffers Injury Scare on the Eve of 2026 French Open

A former champion in Strasbourg, Keys was expected to return to northeastern France for the WTA 500 tournament this week. She was scheduled to face Cristina Bucșa in her first-round clash. However, she has now pulled out of the tournament at the last minute, hoping to be fully fit to compete at Roland Garros.

The injury comes as a bitter blow to Keys with the second Grand Slam of the year on the horizon. But the American is confident that she will be able to return to full fitness in time for the start of the French Open on Sunday.

“I’ve decided it’s best to withdraw from Strasbourg to get healthy and ready to compete in Roland Garros,” Keys said in a statement released by the Internationaux de Strasbourg organizers.

Keys took part in a WTA 125 event in Paris last week following her early elimination at the Italian Open. She delivered strong performances as the top seed amid difficult weather conditions, reaching the final. But after winning the first set against Diane Parry, she was forced to retire from the match due to injury.

The Trophée Clarins run helped Key improve her win-loss record for 2026 to 16-8. Following her impressive 2025 run, which saw her win two titles, the 31-year-old is still searching for her best form.

Keys was eliminated in the fourth round of the Australian Open and was then sent packing in the third round at both the BNP Paribas Open and the Miami Open. She started her clay-court swing with a semifinal run at the Charleston Open, but suffered a frustrating third-round loss to talented youngster Nikola Bartůňková in Rome.

It remains to be seen whether Keys will be able to return to full fitness in time for the French Open. The world No. 19 made the quarterfinals at Roland Garros last year and also made the semifinals in 2018.

After finding some form at the Trophée Clarins, Keys will hope to recover from her injury quickly and make another deep run in Paris at the French Open.
