‘Just Trying to Get Out of His Deal’ — Celtics Star Jaylen Brown Makes Feelings Clear on Drake’s 3-Album ‘Iceman’ Project

Jaylen Brown speculates that Drake dropped his new three-album project because the rapper wants out of his label contract.

Drake spent weeks pulling off high-profile stunts to promote his new project, “Iceman,” only to surprise fans with a massive three-album release featuring 43 tracks in total.

While the drop generated enormous streaming numbers, many listeners felt the project lacked focus and cohesion.

Boston Celtics star Jaylen Brown appears to agree with one of the biggest theories surrounding the release, suggesting the Toronto rapper may simply be trying to move on from his record deal as quickly as possible.

Why Jaylen Brown Believes Drake Dumped 43 Songs at Once

Drake released nearly 2.5 hours of music spanning traditional rap, R&B, and dance-inspired tracks. The three projects combined for 197 million first-day streams, while “Iceman” became the most-streamed album of 2026 in a single day, and Drake became the platform’s most-streamed artist of the year in a single day.

Despite widespread belief that Drake lost his highly publicized feud with Kendrick Lamar in 2024, his commercial dominance clearly remains intact.

However, releasing 43 songs at once is an unusual move, and critics argued the albums feel more like a content dump than a carefully crafted artistic statement. Many even pointed to the lack of a central theme or narrative connecting the tracks.

Brown shared a similar perspective while discussing the project during a Twitch stream, although he admitted he had not yet listened to the entire release.

“Shoutout to Drake, you know, he’s been doing his thing, having a great career. His album just dropped. You know, I got more to listen to, I can’t even give y’all my full opinion. I gotta let it breathe. Maybe I’ll get back on chat and kind of let y’all know. But like the songs that I heard were cool,” Brown said on his recent Twitch stream.

“But I feel like this whole album, he’s just trying to get to whatever the next part of his career is. I think he was just trying to get out of his deal, you know, move forward. So he just dumped a bunch of music with no context.”

Drake signed a massive deal with Universal Music Group in 2022, a contract reported to be worth around $400 million.

However, several lyrics across the new albums have fueled speculation that the rapper is frustrated with his current situation.

On “Make Them Pay,” Drake raps, “I’m better off independent … I just wanna be free,” while another track, “B’s on the Table,” reportedly frames his ongoing legal battle with the label.

Brown is far from the first person to suggest the release may have been motivated by contractual obligations, and speculation has only intensified following the surprise three-album drop.

Whether or not Drake has officially completed his deal remains unclear, but the critics believe the strategy could hurt Drake’s standing creatively, particularly given the mixed reception to the albums.

Brown also expressed frustration with what he sees as a growing lack of storytelling in modern albums.

“I would love to see artists paint and tell a story with their albums again. You know what I mean? Like from track one to the last track, create a full piece. I feel like that era is not really emphasizing our era no more for real. That’s just my thoughts. Take it with a grain of salt. Shoutout to Drake,” he concluded.

Brown is coming off one of the best seasons of his NBA career, averaging a career-high 28.7 points, 6.9 rebounds, and 5.1 assists across 71 regular-season games. He also averaged 25.7 points and 5.7 rebounds during the playoffs.

However, Boston’s season ended in disappointment after the Celtics blew a 3-1 series lead in the first round.
