Oilers Trade Rumors: Edmonton ‘Clear Team To Watch’ For $36,000,000 Stanley Cup Champion

The Edmonton Oilers were expecting another deep Stanley Cup run in the 2025-26 season after back-to-back appearances in the Final. Instead, the year ended with a shocking first-round loss to the Anaheim Ducks and another major coaching change behind the bench.

The quick playoff exit exposed several roster weaknesses, but none drew more attention than Edmonton’s unstable goaltending situation.

As the organization begins another aggressive offseason reset around Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl, speculation has already shifted toward experienced veterans who could stabilize the crease. This conversation emerged after a recent insider report connected Edmonton to a Stanley Cup-winning goaltender whose future in St. Louis suddenly appears uncertain.

Oilers Continue Searching for Answers in Net

The goaltender linked to Edmonton is Jordan Binnington, whose name has surfaced repeatedly in offseason trade discussions following a difficult year with the St. Louis Blues. Despite carrying a 6-year, $36 million contract, Binnington lost control of the starting role late in the season after posting some of the weakest numbers of his NHL career.

In a recent column for Daily Faceoff, NHL insider Matt Larkin identified Edmonton as the “clear team to watch” in the Binnington conversation.

Larkin wrote, “Binnington is coming off the worst season of his career but showed enough at the Olympics to remind us he can be an asset on the right team given his puckhandling and clutch-save ability.” He also added, “The Edmonton Oilers are the clear team to watch.”

This report carries weight because Edmonton’s crease problems became impossible to ignore during the 2025-26 season. The Oilers struggled badly in save percentage, while defensive breakdowns repeatedly exposed former goalie Stuart Skinner and newly acquired Tristan Jarry.

Connor Ingram provided some relative stability, but not the edge that the team needed. The Oilers’ postseason collapse against Anaheim has since only increased pressure on management to pursue a more reliable veteran option before next season begins.

Stanley Cup Pedigree Keeps Binnington in Edmonton Rumors

Even with Binnington’s statistical decline, the Oilers still have reasons to explore the possibility. Edmonton’s front office remains focused on maximizing the championship window around McDavid and Draisaitl, and Binnington brings experience that few available goaltenders can match. He won the Stanley Cup with the Blues in 2019 and recently helped Team Canada capture the 4 Nations Face-Off title.

The connection between Binnington and McDavid through international play has also fueled speculation. Edmonton’s leadership group values players who have succeeded in pressure environments, especially after the organization fired Kris Knoblauch following another disappointing playoff ending.

Still, several obstacles stand in the way of a realistic trade. Binnington’s $6 million cap hit remains difficult for Edmonton to absorb without moving salary elsewhere, and analysts continue debating whether the Oilers should invest heavily in a goalie coming off a career-worst season.

For now, the rumors remain speculative, but Edmonton’s ongoing search for stability in goal has clearly placed Binnington near the center of the conversation.
