‘Is Another Bombshell Coming?’ — Will Mike Vrabel Remain Patriots HC or Will Dianna Russini Scandal Cost Him His Job?

Will Mike Vrabel be coaching the Patriots come Week 1? PFSN's staff debates whether his job is safe in the aftermath of the Dianna Russini saga.

The Mike Vrabel-Dianna Russini scandal has transcended sports and become a tabloid circus, which means it isn’t going away anytime soon. The controversy continues to dominate headlines and capture the public’s attention. New information seems to surface every day, which only fans the flames further.

It was recently announced that the Patriots will play in the 2026 NFL season opener, facing off against the Seattle Seahawks in a rematch of Super Bowl 60. This was a polarizing decision given the Vrabel drama and underwhelming Super Bowl matchup, but it raises a question: Will Vrabel be the head coach of the Patriots come Week 1?

Will Mike Vrabel Be the Patriots HC Come Week 1?

There has been plenty of speculation about Vrabel’s uncertain future and whether the Russini scandal could ultimately cost him his job.

In the latest edition of PFSN Debates, hear from PFSN’s CEO and co-founder Matt Cannata, who previously worked as a communications director in the public sector and has plenty of experience in crisis-management, PFSN’s deputy editor Alex Kennedy, and PFSN’s NFL analysts Jacob Infante, Austin Swaim, and Caleb Yaccarino.

Matt Cannata: “How much more can come out? Probably lots, and I’m sure there are many people who are lining up to leak things to the media. Here’s the thing, though: what would constitute something so egregious that it would result in Mike Vrabel not coaching the Patriots this season?

“I won’t be surprised by anything at this point, but it would need to be a big enough bombshell that it takes a significant toll on his personal life; at that point, he may decide that a leave of absence is best for everyone involved, directly and indirectly. Aside from something at the personal level, is there anything left on the professional side that could cause Vrabel to walk away or, even worse, be fired?

“I think if something came out that he used his relationship with Russini to leverage any kind of communication that resulted in illegal tampering, then that’s where things can go sideways. And for those who say Robert Kraft wouldn’t fire him, remember that Raiders owner Mark Davis didn’t want to fire Jon Gruden, either. If enough outside forces put the right kind of pressure on Kraft, he may be backed into a corner.

“The NFL hates when things like this overshadow the brand. After all, they are all about protecting the shield. And in the offseason when nothing is going on, they might have a bit more tolerance. But if this lingers into training camp and the season and is the storyline throughout? That might be a different story.”

Jacob Infante: “Ultimately, I still think Mike Vrabel will be the head coach of the Patriots come Week 1. As chaotic as this offseason has been for him, I highly doubt New England’s front office would move on from him, having just taken them to the Super Bowl. The Patriots are no strangers to controversy, either.

“The only scenario I could see play out in which Vrabel isn’t the team’s head coach is if he actively chooses to step away from the organization. That said, he stayed with the team for much of the 2026 NFL Draft. Though Vrabel’s alleged affair with Russini surely has had an impact on his relationship with his family, it likely won’t have an affect with the Patriots, where he has remained active within the organization throughout this dramatic media cycle.”

Alex Kennedy: “The NFL has made it clear that they aren’t investigating the Vrabel-Russini scandal, as the league is treating it as a personal matter. The NFL’s decision to schedule the Patriots for the season opener is telling; it certainly suggests that Vrabel is safe. Couple that with the fact that the Patriots’ brass have stood by Vrabel every step of the way and multiple players have supported him publicly, and all signs point to Vrabel coaching this team in Week 1.

“But here’s the big question: Is another bombshell coming? In my opinion, the only way another coach is leading New England in Week 1 is if there’s a major development that takes this saga to the next level such as Russini disclosing crazy details in a tell-all interview or TMZ dropping something wild.

“If that happens, I could see Vrabel announcing a leave of absence and stepping away for a year to focus on his family and let this blow over before ultimately returning in 2027. I highly doubt Robert Kraft will fire Vrabel, but I can envision a scenario where Vrabel steps away for a while to prioritize his family and remove the distraction.”

Austin Swaim: “Mike Vrabel will absolutely be the Patriots’ head coach come Week 1. The strongest wave of outrage has already come and gone. Let’s look at the facts around Vrabel’s circumstances. This isn’t a criminal situation like we saw with Greg Hardy or Ray Rice as players. The Patriots nor Titans received a competitive advantage from the affair.

“Dianna Russini seems to be out of the public eye and she may stay away for quite some time. Plus, it also matters Vrabel had an outstanding first season with the Patriots and won the AFC. Over time, cooler heads will prevail in regards to Vrabel’s professional circumstances, and this matter is really left to be handled privately in his own household.”

Caleb Yaccarino: “Even with all the stories coming out about Mike Vrabel, he will be the New England Patriots’ head coach for Week 1. If Vrabel were a new coach with zero connections to the organization and had not just led the Patriots to the Super Bowl, the likelihood of the team firing him would be much higher.

“Also, the Patriots have shown a history of being fine with various controversies and handling any public blowback. Unless something even more damaging comes to light and Vrabel himself decides to step away, he will probably be coaching in 2026.”
