Indiana Fever head coach Stephanie White sat Caitlin Clark for an extended period in the second quarter during the team’s game against the Washington Mystics, prompting the WNBA world to question her decision-making.
A dramatic comeback by the Fever forced overtime, but the team was defeated 104-102, dropping Indiana below .500 after three games at 1-2.
Many Fever fans may attribute the loss to their coach, who is increasingly unpopular in some circles.
Stephanie White Under Fire After Questionable Rotations Doom Fever Against Mystics
Despite some late-game heroics from Clark, who knocked down 7 3-pointers and scored 32 points, Indiana fell short.
The Fever had no answer for the Mystics’ Sonia Citron, who went 10 of 14 from the field and scored 30 points, nor could they stop forward Kiki Iriafen’s 25-point, 13-rebound double-double.
Many would argue that a brutal second quarter, which saw Clark sit for an extended period in favor of questionable bench depth and ended in a 20-9 run for Washington, played a huge part in the shock defeat.
Popular YouTube commentator Jason Whitlock pulled no punches on White, describing her rotations as “Absolute coaching malpractice in Indianapolis.”
In critiquing White’s rotations, he said, “White figured out a rotation that left Clark and (Aliyah) Boston separated for far too long…offense collapsed.”
Absolute coaching malpractice in Indianapolis. I’m a little bit behind (2 mins left in 2nd QTR). Stephanie White figured out a rotation that left Boston and Clark separated for far too long and when they’ve been on the court together no pick-n-roll. Offense collapsed.

Trent Harvey was equally perplexed in his tweet: “I do not understand why Steph White sat Caitlin for 6 minutes and kept slop-ball for so long. This is what happens when you play with your food.”
Harvey also tweeted, rightly predicting that the game would eventually end in defeat for the Fever and that White upset the game’s flow with her odd rotation decisions. He used the same word choice as Whitlock: “This game is going to be a loss for the Fever…Coach malpractice, she has a very distorted view of what our bench depth is.”
This game is going to be a loss for the Fever.
Steph White messed with the flow early and we’ve still never recovered. Likely won’t. Coach malpractice. She has a very distorted view of what our bench depth is.
I said we might lose to Mystics.

A Fever fan account was far from complimentary of the Fever’s coach: “A Stephanie White offense is not real basketball.”
Another Fever fan also vented to social media about the Fever’s coach, tweeting: “Blame this run on Stephanie White being a terrible coach.”

After the brutal overtime loss, Whitlock tweeted again, demanding White be fired and calling for wholesale changes, making sure to emphasize it is Clark’s team first and foremost. “This game should change everything in the Fever organization. Fire Stephanie White and the whole organization built around Caitlin Clark…”
This game should change everything in the Fever organization. Fire Stephanie White and the whole organization built around Caitlin Clark. Boston’s contract makes no sense if she’s not in pick-n-roll with Clark. You cannot put the toothpaste back in the tube. It’s Caitlin’s team.…

It’s been an underwhelming start for the Fever, who came into this season with high hopes due to their impressive starting lineup. The focus of fans’ ire appears to be on the Fever’s coach after they lost their season opener to the Dallas Wings and Paige Bueckers.
They will look to right the ship in the next game against the Seattle Storm, and it may be wise for White to trust Clark more than she seemingly currently does.
