Bomani Jones on What Trinidad Chambliss Family Thinks of Ole Miss History

Jones, appearing on the latest episode of “The Right Time with Bomani Jones,” shared his profile of Chambliss. Given the fraught history of the state and the institution, Jones sought to uncover if the Mississippi branding still carried the same heavy connotations.

Jones said, “When I did the story on Chambliss, I asked every single member of the Chambliss family if they had any concern about sending their son to play at the University of Mississippi, specifically with the Mississippi part. Okay. It was a no all the way across the board.”

For a family deeply rooted in the sport, the lack of hesitation suggests a generational shift. For younger athletes and their parents, the visceral reaction to the university’s name has been replaced by a focus on modern facilities and NIL opportunities.

“I think that for a lot of the people surrounding Ole Miss, they thought they’d finally beat the rap,” Jones noted. This sentiment is backed by the numbers.

Under Lane Kiffin, Ole Miss has seen a surge in recruiting and transfer portal success. In 2024, Ole Miss boasted a Top 25 recruiting class and ranked No. 1 in the transfer portal rankings according to 247Sports, successfully landing top-tier Black athletes from across the country.

Despite the Chambliss family’s lack of concern, Kiffin was vocal about the unique challenges of recruiting in Oxford. However, Jones highlights a fundamental friction point: trust.

“I think they need to listen to Lane on this and be like, ‘Oh, wait a minute. So this was still coming up,'” Jones argued. “Except nobody trusts Lane when he talks, and that, I think, is the part that sets him up.”

The reality on the ground also supports the Chambliss family’s indifference to the old stigmas. Ole Miss has achieved three 10-plus-win seasons in the last three years, a feat rarely seen in the program’s history. In addition, the roster remains a reflection of the best talent in the South.

Ultimately, Jones’ reporting on the Chambliss family suggests that while the ghosts of the past still haunt the analysts and the older generation of coaches, the modern recruit is looking at the scoreboard.
