‘He Wasn’t Perfect’ — Mike Elko Addresses Marcel Reed Amid Texas A&M QB’s Frustration for ‘Recognition’

Marcel Reed led Texas A&M to its first appearance in the College Football Playoff in 2025, but a late-season slump took some shine off an otherwise promising year for the quarterback. However, the redshirt junior remains a player with huge potential, and optimism continues to build as he heads into the 2026 season.

Mike Elko Sends a Strong Message About Marcel Reed’s Future at Texas A&M

Texas A&M head coach Mike Elko recently spoke about his view of Reed’s caliber and potential.

“Last year, I was hearing he could not complete a forward pass,” Elko told Dallas A&M Club. “He wasn’t perfect, nor was I, but I certainly think he overshot expectations. He had bad stretches down the stretch, and that’s what everyone remembers. He will be the first one to tell you that. His challenge is bigger than people give him credit for.

“We are really excited about where this team is. So much has been talked about with Marcel Reed. The strides he took last year were immense. He is our leader. He received more votes than anybody in the program in captain voting.”

Reed produced more than 3,600 total yards of offense for the Aggies during the 2025 season, as he consistently created explosive plays both as a passer and runner. He ended the year with an 83.6 score in the PFSN College Football QB Impact Metric, which ranked No. 35 nationally for the season.

Reed still has plenty of development ahead if he hopes to guide Texas A&M back into national prominence and surpass expectations this season. One major focus remains his durability, as Elko acknowledged that the Aggies have struggled to keep quarterbacks healthy in recent years, which led to conversations with Reed about balancing aggression with availability.

“‘You can run, but if you run every play, we have seen what happens,’” Elko said. “It’s about being a dual threat guy but also being our starting quarterback for 12 games.”

Reed’s ability, combined with the overall potential of the Texas A&M roster, proves why Elko and his experienced coaching staff believe their player-development approach is starting to show real results. That confidence is also why Reed believes the Aggies deserve more respect nationally.

The quarterback has expressed confidence in the program’s direction, emphasizing that the team has proven it can compete at the highest level.

“Our name is Texas A&M,” Reed told the AggiesWire. “We’re always known for having good recruiting classes but not doing anything with them, but these past two years have been different than what they have been before. I think people should start noticing that, because we’re tired of it, obviously. We think we should have as much recognition as anybody else, because we’re up-and-coming, and we’ve proved it.”

Texas A&M has not produced an All-SEC quarterback since Johnny Manziel, but many believe Reed has a strong chance to become the next one in 2026. However, the Aggies will have to replace significant production lost to the NFL Draft, including wide receiver KC Concepcion and several key offensive linemen.
