Caitlin Clark’s 2026 WNBA campaign just got going, and the discourse keeps finding its rhythm. Just two games in, she’s in the chatter again, proving her stardom hasn’t tasted rust. Among the most prominent voices is from her long-term supporter and former NFL star Robert Griffin III.
Robert Griffin III Defends Caitlin Clark from Early WNBA Critics
While others cannot get past Clark’s cold 3-point shooting and turnovers, RG3 isn’t shy about hopping into yet another CC debate sparked by a pointed message this week.
He took to X to write: “The Indiana Fever are 2 games into the WNBA season and the haters are already trying to say Caitlin Clark was all hype,” the 2011 Heisman Trophy winner posted on X. “Game 1- 20 pts, 7 assists, 5 Rebs. Game 2- 24 pts, 9 assists, 4 Rebs. She isn’t shooting the 3 ball well and she is still BALLIN. STOP THE HATE.”
Clark’s first two outings this season haven’t been clean. Her 3-balls just won’t fall the way they’re supposed to, and her turnovers keep stacking up. This is enough fuel for people to get started bashing CC, which Griffin saw and pushed back on.
Clark dropped 20 in the opening game against the Dallas Wings. This was accompanied by 7 assists and 5 rebounds. But she also had 5 turnovers in the same game. She followed this with 24 points, 9 assists, and 4 rebounds in Wednesday’s 87-78 win over the LA Sparks. This one came with 6 turnovers.
Griffin is no stranger to this kind of pile-on. His own NFL career took a sharp turn after the injuries mounted. His compounding knee injuries shortened his time as a starting quarterback.
So, watching a star get carved up in real time isn’t unfamiliar territory. This isn’t the first time RG3 has pushed back against haters over unfair criticism of Clark. He has consistently done that since her rookie year.
Griffin took aim at the WNBA in August 2024, after a Fever-Storm game in which Skylar Diggins-Smith appeared to shoulder-bump Clark on the floor. Jewell Loyd sidestepped a question about the rookie in the postgame press conference. RG3 saw the pattern there and went public with his frustration.
“It’s VERY CLEAR WNBA players are tired of Caitlin Clark getting all the shine and being the vocal point of every discussion,” he posted on X. “It’s beyond competitiveness and physical play. They don’t even want to answer questions about her. If they don’t like it, THEN STOP HER.”
His next attempt to defend Clark came in 2025, which didn’t land the way he hoped. Griffin posted that people in Angel Reese’s “inner circle” had told him the Chicago Sky star had “grown to hate Caitlin Clark” because of the constant media comparisons between the two rookies.
Reese fired back within hours, accusing Griffin of fabricating sources for clout. “lying on this app when everybody know the first and last name of everybody in my circle for clout is nastyyyy work,” she wrote on X.
Reese’s mother followed with her own post, dismissing Griffin’s claim and making it clear nobody in that circle had spoken to him.
Through two games of 2026, Clark is averaging 22.0 points, 8.0 assists, and 4.5 rebounds while shooting 45.7 percent from the field. She missed 31 games last season after soft-tissue injuries to her quad, groin, and ankle limited her to 13 appearances in 2025.
