Lorenzo Musetti’s 2026 season has taken another devastating blow. The Italian star has officially withdrawn from the upcoming French Open and Hamburg Open after suffering a serious thigh injury during the Rome Masters.
The 24-year-old world No. 10 struggled physically during his Round of 16 clash against Casper Ruud at the Foro Italico on Tuesday. Despite needing a medical timeout, Musetti hobbled through the remainder of the match to finish in front of his home crowd, but ultimately fell 6-3, 6-1 to the Norwegian. However, subsequent medical scans revealed severe damage, forcing him to cancel his plans for Paris.
Lorenzo Musetti Details Heartbreaking French Open Withdrawal After Thigh Injury
On Wednesday, Musetti took to Instagram to share the heartbreaking news, confirming a rectus femoris (quadriceps) tear that will sideline him for the foreseeable future.
“After yesterday’s match, I underwent medical examinations which revealed a rectus femoris injury, requiring several weeks of rest and recovery,” Musetti wrote. “Unfortunately, this means I won’t be able to compete in Hamburg and Roland Garros; news that is incredibly hard to take.”
Musetti also addressed his decision to play through the obvious physical agony against Ruud.
“A huge thank you to the Rome crowd for your incredible support: that’s exactly why, despite not being 100%, I chose to step on court and give everything I had in my home tournament,” he added. “I’ll keep you updated.”
A Closer Look at Musetti’s Injury Timeline
This withdrawal is a massive setback for Musetti, who reached the 2025 Roland Garros semifinals on clay last year. Now that he cannot defend those massive ranking points in Paris, Musetti is mathematically guaranteed to drop out of the ATP Top 10 next month.

Unfortunately, brutal injuries on the biggest stages have defined Musetti’s career:
- January 28, 2026, Australian Open Quarterfinal: Musetti retired during his first Australian Open quarterfinal against Novak Djokovic (suspected leg tear/iliopsoas).
- April 13, 2025, Barcelona Open: Musetti withdrew from Barcelona due to a right thigh injury that affected him during the Monte-Carlo Masters final against Carlos Alcaraz. After the withdrawal, he said, “I don’t want to take any excuses today. Carlos probably deserved to win. But the thing that was a pity [was] that I could not show myself, my game, until the last point. That’s it.”
- Previous Years: Frequently dealt with smaller injuries during high-stakes moments, including a shoulder injury at the United Cup and a fourth-round retirement at the 2021 French Open due to lower back pain and groin cramps.
The Italian will now have to race against the clock to recover his fitness for the summer grass-court swing.
