‘Lot of Noise There’ — Ex-Canucks Star Conor Garland Sets Record Straight on J.T Miller Vs. Elias Pettersson Beef

The reported tension between J.T. Miller and Elias Pettersson has become one of the defining storylines behind the Vancouver Canucks’ dramatic collapse, a season that saw a former contender fall all the way to the bottom of the NHL standings in 2026.

Now, former Canucks forward Conor Garland is pushing back on just how serious the situation really was.

Conor Garland Clears the Air on J.T. Miller-Elias Pettersson Drama

The conflict between Miller and Pettersson was not a sudden event but a “festering” issue that reportedly dated back several years, even to the tenure of former coach Bruce Boudreau.

The most talked-about moment occurred during an October 2024 practice, when tensions between Miller and Pettersson boiled over. After Pettersson slashed Miller’s stick, Miller answered with a cross-check and reportedly called him a “f—–g baby” during the exchange.

As the season spiraled, both stars struggled to find consistency. Pettersson’s offensive production dipped noticeably, and his eventual move to the second power-play unit only fueled speculation that the locker-room issues were affecting the entire team.

By January 2025, Canucks president Jim Rutherford publicly admitted the fractured relationship was hurting team chemistry. Days later, Vancouver traded Miller to the New York Rangers in a move many viewed as the breaking point for the organization.

Now, Garland is offering a much different perspective on the situation.

“I’d say overblown,” Garland said. “I enjoyed both of them. They’re both great players. My first year there, we missed the playoffs by like two points, I didn’t hear much of it. When you struggle as a team, you hear a lot about it. We went to Game 7 against the Oilers and lost 3-2, and you didn’t hear much about it. So, I mean, I don’t know. It’s just there’s just a lot of noise there.”

Garland also pointed to how talented that Canucks roster really was, admitting his biggest disappointment was that the group never went further during its short contender window.

“You lose to Edmonton, two best players in the league in a Game 7, and a couple bounces go your way, that night can be a lot different.”

Vancouver’s fall has been steep since. After finishing first in the Pacific Division in 2023-24 and posting 90 points in 2024-25, the Canucks crashed to a league-worst 25-49-8 record in 2025-26. What’s worse is that the draft lottery didn’t go their way after all that trouble, as they were handed the 3rd overall pick, pushing them out of Gavin McKenna range.

Fair or not, the Miller-Pettersson rift has become the storyline many fans connect to the beginning of the end for that era of Canucks hockey.
