The Vegas Golden Knights have lost again, dropping a crucial Game 4 against the Anaheim Ducks, as the pressure surrounding their playoff push continues to rise. While Vegas struggled defensively in crucial stretches, Mitch Marner remained at the center of the conversation because of another productive postseason outing.
His playoff performance with Vegas has reopened debates around how his final years in Toronto were viewed and whether criticism from the fan base ever crossed the line. This discussion picked up again after former Leafs enforcer Jay Rosehill publicly rejected the idea that Marner deserves an apology from critics in Toronto.
Former Leafs Enforcer Doubles Down Despite Mitch Marner’s Playoffs Surge
Marner continued his strong postseason form Sunday night despite Vegas falling 4-3 to Anaheim in Game 4 of the Western Conference Second Round. The 29-year-old recorded three assists and helped generate offense throughout the night alongside Jack Eichel, but the Ducks capitalized on special teams and defensive breakdowns to even the series at 2-2.
Even with Marner leading the NHL postseason scoring race, former Maple Leafs enforcer Jay Rosehill made it clear he has not changed his opinion about Marner’s years in Toronto.
Rosehill, who now co-hosts Leafs Morning Take, responded directly to the growing narrative that Leafs fans owe the winger an apology owing to a hot playoff run in Vegas.
Rosehill posted on X, “He scored 1 goal in games 5,6,7 in 9 years with the Maple Leafs. He disappeared. That’s why he got heat.”
The criticism comes after Marner previously revealed that both he and his family dealt with death threats during his final seasons in Toronto, forcing them to hire security. That revelation led some fans and analysts to revisit how harsh the scrutiny became around one of the franchise’s most talented players.
Rosehill, however, pushed back strongly against that discussion and argued that the criticism was tied strictly to Marner’s postseason production in elimination situations.
Marner’s first season in Vegas has already looked very different from the closing stretch of his Maple Leafs tenure. After arriving in a sign-and-trade deal last July, he signed an 8-year, $96 million contract carrying a $12 million annual cap hit. While his regular-season numbers dipped slightly compared to his final Toronto season, his playoff production has surged.

Through 10 postseason games, Marner has recorded 16 points with 6 goals and 10 assists while posting a plus-9 rating. He also has 4 multi-point performances in his last 5 playoff outings, including a natural hat trick in Game 3 win against Anaheim.
Still, despite the offensive explosion in Vegas, Rosehill’s latest comments show that some critics in Toronto remain unconvinced that Marner’s current playoff success changes the narrative surrounding his time with the Maple Leafs.
