‘Why Is Mike Vrabel Getting Special Treatment?’ — NFL Analyst Calls Out ESPN’s Silence on Dianna Russini Scandal

A growing debate surrounds ESPN’s handling of the Mike Vrabel-Dianna Russini situation, as critics accuse the network of selective reporting.

ESPN has stayed unusually quiet about the Mike Vrabel and Dianna Russini scandal, and not everyone is letting that slide.

Tony Farmer of “49ers Talk” has taken aim at the network in this regard. He pointed out discrepancies in how ESPN has reported the Vrabel situation versus other controversies.

ESPN Called Out Over Selective Silence in Mike Vrabel Scandal

Farmer took to X and wrote, “ESPN made a 5 month spectacle out of Rex Ryan’s leaked footage fetish video when he was Jets head coach. The video was with his own wife too. Why is Mike Vrabel getting special treatment?”

Farmer is not the only person in the sports community to notice ESPN’s conspicuous silence on the Vrabel-Russini scandal.

A couple of theories are floating around about the quiet treatment. One is that the NFL now owns 10% of ESPN, which could be influencing what the network chooses to cover.

Also, Russini herself worked at ESPN before joining The Athletic in 2023. Photos of her and Vrabel together at a New York City bar back in March 2020 have since surfaced, published by Page Six, and that was during her ESPN tenure.

ESPN has refused to comment on whether it is reviewing her past reporting on Vrabel and the Titans. A resurfaced post by ESPN VP of Communications Bill Hofheimer also put the network in hot water. Back in 2021, Hofheimer praised Russini’s “uninterrupted access” to Vrabel when he was coaching the Titans.

Nobody thought much of it at the time. But now fans are having a field day with it, and Hofheimer is probably wishing he could take it back.

Former ESPN host Max Kellerman criticized the interest fans and media outlets have shown in the incident and urged them to move on. His comments did not go over well. Kellerman said people are “using it as a bullsh*t excuse to be titillated by an affair. It’s disgusting,” when referring to fans discussing the story.

That drew a sharp response from former NFL player Breiden Fehoko, who pointed out a glaring inconsistency. He reminded Kellerman that ESPN had no problem going deep on the Tiger Woods scandal back in 2009.

That situation went wall-to-wall in sports media for months after a car accident outside Woods’ Florida home triggered reports of multiple affairs, eventually leading to his divorce from Elin Nordegren.

So Kellerman’s outrage feels selective at best.

The Vrabel and Russini situation came to light after photos surfaced of the two at an Arizona resort, a destination known for couples.

Unlike the Woods saga, neither Vrabel’s nor Russini’s partners have publicly announced a separation. But the professional fallout has been real, as Russini resigned from her job amid an internal investigation.

Vrabel, now head coach of the New England Patriots, made headlines when he announced he’d skip the third day of the NFL Draft to attend counseling. He delivered that statement directly to reporters during a pre-draft press conference, and ESPN covered it extensively.
