‘LET THEM PLAY!’ — Former NFL Player Sounds Off on Why Victor Wembanyama Shouldn’t Be Suspended for Wolves-Spurs Game 5

Emmanuel Acho sounds off on Victor Wembanyama's Game 4 ejection, believing that he should not be suspended for Game 5.

Victor Wembanyama’s ejection in Game 4 of the playoffs against the Minnesota Timberwolves continued to make headlines.

Following a contact foul with Naz Reid, the San Antonio Spurs center was ejected from the game.

This saw the Timberwolves roar back into contention with a 114-109 win. However, the center’s tossing has been widely debated with physicality in the league in focus.

Emmanuel Acho Weighs In on Victor Wembanyama’s Ejection

Sharing his view on Wembanyama’s ejection in Game 4 was former NFL star Emmanuel Acho.

During the latest segment of his “Speakeasy” podcast, Acho stressed the high-octane action that elevates between players and teams during the playoff season.

“But you better not suspend him for the next game. This is playoff basketball. It is intense,” he said. “It is game after game after game, and make no mistake about it. Naz Reid cheap-shotted at Wemby two games before, and Wemby just didn’t cry about it,” Acho said.

“When he was running back on defense, Naz Reid shoves him in the back… shoves him to the ground. Wemby just doesn’t sit there and bawl about it. So when we got up, he played on. He played the next play..It’s playoff basketball. Let them play…Eject Wemby because it was a dirty move, it was an intentional move… but if you suspend Wemby for Game 5, you’re now completely shifting the series.”

Earlier in the game, Wembanyama was whistled for an offensive foul after he struck Reid, who had him covered outside the paint alongside teammate Jaden McDaniels.

This prompted a video review, while fans at the Target Center erupted in raucous chants, asking for Wembanyama to be tossed.

Upon review, the foul was deemed a “Flagrant 2 for excessive contact above the neck,” leading to an automatic ejection.

This saw the Frenchman finish with 4 points and 4 rebounds in just over 12 minutes of action. His absence on the floor immediately opened up scoring opportunities for the Timberwolves.

As for a suspension, San Antonio does not expect the league to hand down one to Wembanyama, per Brett Siegel.

Speaking to the media after the game, Spurs head coach Mitch Johnson shared his two cents on the physicality.

“Naz Reid was okay, and that call was warranted, but in terms of the game plan of every single team we face since that young man has been in the league and the physicality that people try to impose on him and the lack of protection is really disappointing.”

On the game front, the Spurs were led by De’Aaron Fox and Stephon Castle, who scored 24 and 20 points, respectively. Adding more scoring punch was Dylan Harper, who poured in 24 points off the bench.

For the Timberwolves, Anthony Edwards had a game-high 36 points along with 6 rebounds. McDaniels and Julius Randle had 14 and 12 points, respectively.

The win in Game 4 sees Minnesota tie it at 2-2, setting up another series that will almost certainly go down to the wire.

The action moves back to San Antonio when both sides meet for a pivotal Game 5 at the Frost Bank Center on Tuesday.
