‘He Committed No Crimes’ — Stephen A. Smith Passionately Defends Mike Vrabel Amid Dianna Russini Firestorm

Stephen A. Smith argued that Mike Vrabel's alleged personal failings don't warrant losing his job, and pointed to Drake Maye's public support.

The Mike Vrabel-Dianna Russini scandal has now stretched past the one-month mark, with new photos, documents, and video surfacing on a near-weekly basis since Page Six first published images of the Patriots head coach and the NFL reporter at an Arizona resort on April 7.

Since then, more photos from a bar in New York City in 2020, a Mississippi casino in 2024, and a TMZ report detailing a private boat outing in Tennessee in 2021 have all followed. All of them have added another layer to a story neither Vrabel nor Russini has been able to contain.

Stephen A. Smith Claims Mike Vrabel Shouldn’t Lose His Job

An increasing number of critics and media personalities are calling for Vrabel to resign or for the Patriots to fire him, as they believe the controversy has spiraled out of control for a franchise that recently played in the Super Bowl.

However, ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith forcefully pushed back against calls for Vrabel’s departure and drew a clear line between personal failings and professional competence. He spoke about it on “The Stephen A. Smith Show.”

“If you know anything about football, you know the man can coach and that the man did his job,” Smith said. “Let’s not act like this is a man that doesn’t deserve to be the head coach of the New England Patriots. And regardless of what we may feel, what some out there may feel about the allegations associated with him, he broke no laws. He committed no crimes. He just made decisions, allegedly, that others would refrain from. That doesn’t mean he should lose his job.”

Patriots quarterback Drake Maye also publicly supported his head coach, calling Vrabel “a great human being.” Smith believes Maye’s message carries weight, and it proves that New England should not part ways with its head coach.

“That’s a star young quarterback for the New England Patriots,” Smith said about Maye. “His words matter in this equation. He’s playing for a coach that made him into an All-Pro and a top-two league MVP candidate in one year.

As Smith mentioned later in the video, the only people Vrabel owes an apology to are the ones he goes home to. He has been married to his wife, Jen, since 1999 and has two sons. So far, there has been no public indication of a separation.

As of now, owner Robert Kraft has given no signal that Vrabel’s firing is under consideration. The head coach job appears to be safe unless something emerges that Kraft wasn’t previously aware of, or unless Vrabel himself decides to step away to prioritize his family.

Neither scenario appears imminent, but neither can be ruled out as long as TMZ, Page Six, and other outlets continue to uncover more details about the alleged relationship between Russini and Vrabel.
