The Toronto Maple Leafs stunned the hockey world at the 2026 NHL Draft Lottery, jumping into the first overall spot after a disappointing season that ended without a playoff berth. With new GM John Chayka and advisor Mats Sundin now guiding a roster surrounded by uncertainty over Auston Matthews’ future, the franchise suddenly finds itself holding the rights to a player many view as a generational talent.
Following the lottery win, Gavin McKenna’s agent shared the camp’s early reaction to the result, acknowledging the significance of a prospect of his caliber potentially landing in the center of the hockey world.
Maple Leafs Have Clear Path to Gavin McKenna in 2026 NHL Draft
McKenna’s name has become central to the conversation after Toronto secured the No. 1 overall selection despite entering the lottery with only an 8.5% chance of winning. The result allowed the Maple Leafs to retain their 2026 first-round pick, which otherwise would have gone to the Boston Bruins as part of the Brandon Carlo trade conditions.
McKenna’s agent, Pat Brisson, recently discussed the surprise outcome during an appearance on “On the Sheet with Jeff Marek,” admitting that Toronto’s victory was not widely expected around the league.
“We talked about the possibilities,” Brisson said. “Obviously the odds of the Leafs winning were pretty low compared to Vancouver and Chicago. So you always talk about the possibilities.”
Brisson added that the unexpected order at the top of the draft created immediate intrigue, especially with San Jose also moving up during the lottery process.
“Then you start talking about what it could be,” Brisson explained. “We haven’t dived really deep into it yet to be honest with you. But it was a surprise, even the Sharks moving to second.”
The reaction reflects how Toronto’s offseason outlook changed in an instant after a disastrous 2025-26 campaign. The organization now holds the opportunity to add a player widely viewed as the top blue-chip prospect in the class following a dominant freshman season at Penn State, where McKenna recorded 51 points in 35 games.
Scouts have consistently praised McKenna’s vision, puck control, and ability to create plays in tight areas. His offensive awareness and patience with the puck have drawn comparisons to elite NHL playmakers, while his edge work and lateral skating allow him to generate offense without relying entirely on straight-line speed.

Toronto’s lottery win also carries long-term implications beyond the player itself. Because the Leafs retained their protected 2026 first-round pick, the organization must now eventually transfer unprotected first-round selections in 2027 and 2028 to either Philadelphia or Boston to complete previous trade obligations.
Even with those future complications, the immediate focus remains on Gavin McKenna and the possibility of Toronto adding another franchise-changing talent to a roster searching for stability after a difficult season.
