‘That Knocked Us Down’ — Connor McDavid’s Teammate Reveals Exact Moment That Derailed Oilers

Connor McDavid’s Edmonton Oilers were forced to go back to the drawing board after the Anaheim Ducks sent them packing in six games in the 2026 NHL Playoffs.

The Oilers entered the 2026 postseason with strong expectations after a standout 138-point regular season from captain Connor McDavid, but their push ended much earlier than planned. The early exit brought underlying issues into focus, including a 77.8% penalty kill that slipped in the playoffs to just 50% and continued instability on the blueline.

As scrutiny grows on what went wrong, McDavid’s teammate, Vasily Podkolzin, pointed to the exact moment that changed the course of the series. In his view, that one breakdown slowed Edmonton’s attack and played a major role in shaping their disappointing playoff finish.

Game 4 Overtime Loss Derailed Connor McDavid and Oilers’ Momentum

Podkolzin pointed directly to Game 4 as the turning point of the series. Speaking in an interview with R.org, he described how a missed opportunity in regulation quickly turned into a setback that the team could not recover from.

“That game gave Anaheim emotion and took it away from us,” Podkolzin said. “We were leading, we could have won it in regulation, but then we lost in overtime, and that knocked us down.”

He added that the result carried extra weight because of the team’s past success in similar situations. “Especially because Game 4s usually went well for us, but this time it was the opposite.”

The loss pushed Edmonton to the brink and forced a response in Game 5. Podkolzin noted that the team still believed it could recover, saying, “We went into Game 5 confident, at home, in front of our fans, and we knew we were going to win.” Edmonton mounted half a fight, but the damage from the earlier loss remained evident in the decisive Game 6 defeat.

McDavid, of course, left money on the table to help the team, but it still ended in early disappointment. In October 2025, he signed a two-year extension worth $25 million, choosing a lower cap hit to help the team build a stronger roster. The move gave management flexibility, but the early exit has raised questions about the plan going forward.

After the elimination, McDavid did not hold back in his assessment of the team’s performance. “We were an average team all year,” he said. “When you’re an average team with high expectations, you’re going to be disappointed. We just never found it.” His remarks pointed to a larger issue that went past just one series.

Podkolzin also offered insight into playing alongside McDavid, highlighting the pace and decision-making required. “With Connor, everything is faster,” he said. “He makes you constantly look for him on the ice. That is the first decision in any situation.”

Considering the Oilers have the prime years of McDavid, they now face an important offseason with clear areas to address. Secondary scoring, defensive structure, and goaltending remain key concerns.

With roughly $16.5 million in cap space, the organization must act carefully to maximize its window while this core remains intact.
