Insider Confirms Brendan Sorsby’s NFL Fate As Joey McGuire Gets New Clarity on QB Room

The roller-coaster offseason in Lubbock has taken another seismic turn. Amid the gambling investigation into Brendan Sorsby, speculation is strong that the Texas Tech quarterback will lose his eligibility. So, what happens to him now? ESPN’s Adam Schefter has dropped new intel on it.

What Adam Schefter’s Intel Means for Brendan Sorsby’s Future

Schefter appeared on “The Pat McAfee Show” and talked about the Sorsby situation. After hiring high-powered antitrust attorney Jeffrey Kessler to fight an NCAA probe involving over 10,000 wagers, some allegedly placed on his own team during his time at Indiana, Sorsby appears to be preparing for an exit strategy.

According to Schefter, the NFL Supplemental Draft is no longer just a ‘Plan B,’ it is becoming the expected outcome.

“There’s a real possibility that Brendan Sorsby enters the supplemental draft if his eligibility isn’t restored,” Schefter noted. “I do think a team would use a high pick if he gets into the supplemental draft. There are a lot of people that think he’s a real talent and a bonafide prospect.”

Schefter’s reporting confirms that NFL scouts are willing to look past the red flags of a gambling addiction and NCAA sanctions to secure a player who threw for 2,800 yards and 27 touchdowns last season. If Kessler cannot secure a path to immediate eligibility by the June 30 declaration deadline, Sorsby is widely expected to become the highest-drafted supplemental player in decades.

But where does it leave Joey McGuire’s Texas Tech? The concern for McGuire all spring has been the health of Will Hammond, the heir apparent who saw his 2025 season end abruptly with a torn ACL against Oklahoma State.

The initial timeline suggested Hammond might not be 100% until the heart of the Big 12 schedule. However, recent reports indicate that the Hutto native is defying medical expectations.

On3’s Pete Nakos reported that Hammond’s knee was getting better at a rapid pace. In addition, fans also witnessed him throwing in recent social media clips. As a result, a Week 1 return could be on the cards; he was previously expected to return around the Week 3 game against Houston.

For a team that was staring at the prospect of starting Tulsa transfer Kirk Francis or redshirt freshman Lloyd Jones, Hammond’s accelerated recovery is the ultimate lifeline.
