The Carolina Hurricanes wrapped up their Round 1 Stanley Cup playoff series in dominant fashion, sweeping Brady Tkachuk and the Ottawa Senators in four games to become the first team to advance this postseason.
Now, the focus shifts to what comes next, and according to the Hurricanes GM Eric Tulsky, that early finish might be just as valuable as the wins themselves.
Hurricanes GM Emphasizes Value of Rest
Carolina entered the series as the clear favorites after finishing top of the Eastern Conference with a 53-22-7 record. The Senators, meanwhile, grabbed the final wild-card spot after a late push.
While the sweep looks one-sided on paper, the games were far from easy. The Hurricanes opened with a 2-0 win in Game 1, followed it up with a hard-fought 3-2 double-overtime victory in Game 2, edged Game 3 by a 2-1 score, and sealed the series with a 4-2 win in Game 4.
The sweep also put the Hurricanes in rare company, becoming just the 20th team in NHL history to go through an entire best-of-seven series without trailing at any point.
By finishing the job early, Carolina earned something every playoff team craves: time. They now get a few extra days to rest and reset before facing the Philadelphia Flyers in Round 2, after they eliminated the Pittsburgh Penguins in six games.
GM Eric Tulsky made it clear how valuable this break could be. He acknowledged the debate about rest versus rhythm but stressed how taxing the season has been, especially with a packed schedule that saw the team play 11 games in 18 days to close out the regular season.
“It’s huge. Having the opportunity to get a few days off is helpful. The other thing it lets us do is we got a few real practices in… we had no practice for the last month of the season,” Tulsky said.
Tulsky pointed out that the time off allows players to recover from fatigue and minor injuries, something nearly every player is dealing with at this stage. “We want to put in new wrinkles and adjust what we’re doing. You haven’t had the chance to run through it on the ice. And so getting some real practice time has value, too,” Tulsky added.
That extra time on the ice could help integrate new players and fine-tune adjustments ahead of the next round.

With momentum, rest, and preparation on their side, the Hurricanes now turn their attention to the next challenge.
