‘Absolutely Diabolical’— NFL World Reacts to ‘Calculated’ Timing of New York Post’s Mike Vrabel-Dianna Russini Bombshells

NFL world slams New York Post for ‘calculated’ timing of Vrabel-Russini bombshells on draft night, was it strategic or coincidence?

The Mike Vrabel-Dianna Russini drama is taking up more space in the NFL community than the NFL Draft after it took another dramatic turn just hours before the 2026 NFL Draft, with fresh reports and photos surfacing online.

What had already been a growing off-field storyline suddenly became one of the biggest talking points heading into draft night. The timing of these latest developments, in particular, drew as much attention as their content.

NFL World Questions Timing of New York Post’s Mike Vrabel-Russini Reports

The strongest reactions centered on when the latest reports were published. NFL podcaster Nick Cattles summed up the sentiment, reflecting a belief that the release was strategically aligned with one of the league’s biggest nights.

“For Vrabel & Russini, this is a ‘you reap what you sow’ situation. Also, the NY Post has been absolutely diabolical in their timing of these stories. Dropping these picks on the day of the NFL Draft is as cold and calculated as it gets. Man,” Cattles wrote.

That take sparked further debate among media figures. Hank Campbell of WSJ responded to Cattles’ post by stating, “That’s good journalism.” His perspective framed the timing not as manipulation, but as effective reporting that maximizes reach and impact.

Zachary Faria of the Washington Examiner added another interesting turn to the conversation, comparing the situation to past draft-day controversies.

“It’s a lot better than the old tradition of some USA Today loser dredging up tweets from one of the players getting drafted where he used the n-word while quoting rap lyrics when he was 14 or whatever,” Faria posted on X.

His comment suggested that, in his view, the focus on this story was more substantive than some previous draft-night narratives. Meanwhile, NFL analyst Darren Rovell was another one to point out the broader context surrounding the timing.

“NY Post goes with Vrabel/Russini the day after the Jets & Giants have a combined 3 Top 10 picks in the NFL Draft,” Rovell noted.

Social media also saw its share of humor amid the controversy. A parody account shared a meme of LeBron James celebrating, and all fired up, captioned, “The New York Post when it comes to covering extramarital affairs:”

While the online reaction intensified, Vrabel himself addressed the media shortly before the draft, attempting to take responsibility following the release of multiple images involving Russini.

All this started after reports showed the two together at an Arizona resort, which they initially both downplayed. However, the latest batch of photos added new context, including images from a New York bar in 2020.

The situation has had immediate consequences. Russini stepped down from her role at The Athletic amid the growing scrutiny, while Vrabel acknowledged having “difficult conversations” with both his family and the Patriots organization.

Vrabel also announced that he would step away from the team on Day 3 of the draft to seek counseling, signaling the personal toll of the situation. Despite the controversy, the Patriots publicly backed their head coach.

In a statement, the organization emphasized its support, noting, “The New England Patriots fully support Mike Vrabel’s decision to prioritize his family first, as well as his own well-being.”

With the NFL Draft still unfolding and the league’s spotlight firmly fixed on its biggest stage, the intersection of football and controversy remains impossible to ignore.
