With the 2026 NFL Draft less than two weeks away, teams around the league are making their final decisions regarding their picks, and Alabama quarterback Ty Simpson once again is in the headlines. The signal-caller has been the subject of some controversy this offseason as it relates to how high he ranks in the quarterback draft class.
Ty Simpson Answers Question About His Arm Talent
Confidence is key to playing quarterback effectively in the NFL. Signal-callers’ confidence levels often directly correlate with their overall performance. As such, Simpson takes a holistic approach to the position, emphasizing confidence.
The Alabama product appeared on “Gruden’s QB Class,” where legendary NFL coach Jon Gruden asked him where he thinks his “arm talent” stacks up against the best quarterbacks in the league.
“I feel like I can throw with anybody,” Simpson said. “I’m a pure passer of the ball, thrower of the ball. That’s why you know, I bet on myself, I can throw with anybody in the world.”
Simpson demonstrated a strong ability to make crucial throws during his one and only season as a starter in college. He proved he can hold his own against some of the best defenses in college football.
PFSN similarly highlighted the Crimson Tide star’s strengths in his scouting report.
“One of Simpson’s best traits is his mechanical profile; he has some of the cleanest throwing form in the class, with consistent sync and hip torque across situations,” the report noted. “And in his best moments, he’s shown he can quickly discern coverage voids pre-snap and anticipate over the middle.”
As the son of a football coach, Simpson developed a refined throwing technique that stands out in the 2026 quarterback class. While many don’t make much of the one-year starter, he certainly has upside that can be developed in the right system.
“Ty Simpson’s sample size remains frustratingly small, but the Alabama passer took the NFL Draft world by storm with his quick ascent in 2025,” the report added. “Simpson waited his turn to start at Alabama, and at his best in 2025, that time developing appeared to have molded him into a clear Round 1 passer.”

Simpson drove Kalen DeBoer’s Alabama squad to an 11-4 record in 2025. He put up 3,567 passing yards for 28 touchdowns and 5 interceptions. According to PFSN’s CFB QB Impact Metric, Simpson ranked 25th among quarterbacks in college football last year with an impact score of 85.4.
Simpson isn’t a Day 1 starter and is likely to only develop into an NFL starter after sitting on the bench for a couple of years. How NFL teams view him will become clear once the draft is underway next week.
