Andy Roddick Demands Fine Refund After Daniil Medvedev’s $7,000 Outburst

Following Daniil Medvedev's outburst in Monte-Carlo, Andy Roddick has revealed what he would do in that situation.

Daniil Medvedev had a rough outing at the Monte-Carlo as he lost 6-0, 6-0 to Matteo Berrettini in the second round. The Russian also threw a tantrum of epic proportions as he smashed his racket seven times before putting it in a courtside trash can.

Tennis legend Andy Roddick has now had his say on Medvedev’s outburst, for which he was fined €6,000 (US$7,000).

Andy Roddick Shares Thoughts on Daniil Medvedev’s Monte-Carlo Outburst

On his “Served Media” podcast, Roddick revealed what he would have done had he been in Medvedev’s shoes during his Monte-Carlo Masters thrashing. The American joked that he would probably have tried to fake an injury to avoid a double bagel.

“I don’t think I would have done it, but 100% would have crossed my mind. 6-0, 3-0, I’m just thinking, can I convincingly turn my ankle and fall over? I might let you take the tip of my pinkie and cut it off before losing 0 and 0. That would be really hard for me to get over. That would hurt my ego so bad. It mainly just says a lot about my own insecurities. But 0 and 0, oh man,” he said.

Roddick also expressed surprise at Medvedev’s struggles, citing his recent strong run at Indian Wells and his overall clay-court record. He was also shocked to learn that Medvedev had won only 17 points throughout the match.

“In 49 minutes, 0 and 0, I don’t know. It’s unfathomable that someone as good as Medvedev loses 0 and 0. Clay is not his best surface. He’s won a Masters 1000 on clay; he’s made the quarters of Roland Garros. I don’t know if he watches the clip back and has a sense of humor about it. It would be a rough one. It’s hard,” Roddick added.

When Medvedev’s fine for the incident was mentioned, Roddick joked that he might consider sending the ATP Tour an invoice, since he would be fined that much for cursing on the court.

“I’ve gotten fined that much for cussing on the court. If I got fined [that much] for cussing, I want a refund. I might send in an invoice to the tour,” he said.

Despite his woes at the Monte-Carlo Masters, Medvedev has enjoyed a strong start to the season and holds a 19-6 win-loss record with two titles to his name. He also handed Carlos Alcaraz his first defeat of 2026 at Indian Wells, where he lost to Jannik Sinner in the final.

Medvedev is expected to make his return to the court at the Madrid Open later this month, the next ATP Masters 1000 event on the calendar.
