The opening day finished all square after Andreescu brought Canada back into the tie with a composed 6-4, 7-6(4) win over Sonja Zhiyenbayeva in the second singles rubber of the Billie Jean King Cup. With the contest evenly poised, both teams were left facing a decisive second day in their bid to reach the finals.
However, Kazakhstan seized control on the second day as Anna Danilina and Zhibek Kulambayeva eased past Bianca Andreescu and Kayla Cross 7-5, 6-1 in the doubles rubber. That advantage was then reinforced by Putintseva, who edged Andreescu in a gritty marathon singles clash on Saturday.
The match proved grueling from the outset, with the first set reaching a tie-break that was eventually secured by Putintseva 7-6 (5). Andreescu significantly raised her level in the second, taking it 6-3 to force a decider. The former US Open champion scored a break to go up 4-3 in the decider, but the Kazakh mounted a spirited comeback, forcing the set into yet another tie-break.
Putintseva’s comeback surge even carried her to match point, with Andreescu serving at 4-6 in the tie-break. What followed, however, was unexpected.
Under immense pressure, Andreescu produced a costly double fault, her second serve sailing far away from the service box altogether. The lapse not only handed Putintseva the win but also ended Team Canada’s hopes of reaching the Finals.

With the result, Kazakhstan booked its place in September’s Finals of the Billie Jean King Cup, while the 2023 champions will now shift their focus to November’s playoffs. It is worth nothing that Team Canada missed the presence of its top two singles players in the WTA rankings, world No. 9 Victoria Mboko and No. 25 Leylah Fernandez. Their services might have proved crucial in the grueling encounter.
Meanwhile, Andreescu has struggled to find her rhythm on the main tour in 2026. Her most recent outing came at the Charleston Open, where she exited in the second round following a loss to American Sofia Kenin.
