Frustrated Jelena Ostapenko Backs Carlos Alcaraz in Escalating Tennis Privacy War

Jelena Ostapenko backs Carlos Alcaraz in an escalating tennis privacy war, warning that backstage tour cameras are too much.

Jelena Ostapenko is joining Carlos Alcaraz to demand strict limits on behind-the-scenes filming during the grueling season. The 2017 French Open champion says the relentless push for all-access content is stripping athletes of their physical and mental privacy. With cameras now documenting everything from locker room routines to private coaching chats, top players are officially pushing back against an invasive broadcast model.

Carlos Alcaraz and Jelena Ostapenko Fight for Backstage Privacy

The conversation gained serious traction when Alcaraz recently voiced his frustrations about the erosion of boundaries on tour. During his pre-tournament press conference in Monaco, the 22-year-old Spaniard pointed out that players are losing the ability to strategize or decompress without worrying about a viral clip hitting social media.

“Having very close cameras, which can see what we are looking at on our phone, I think it’s too much,” Alcaraz said. “We already don’t have much privacy in tournament, and I think that’s too much. We should have spaces where we can be quiet without being filmed.”

Ostapenko bringing her veteran, unfiltered voice to the chorus signals this is a structural issue across both the ATP and WTA tours. During a recent interview with Ubitennis, she was asked about a unique feature at the ATX Open in Austin. Tournament organizers set up a literal “rage room” for players to decompress in a completely private, soundproof space, smashing objects safely away from the cameras.

“More or less what the players say: I think we need some privacy. I know it’s fun for fans and tennis lovers to see everything we do, but on the other hand, if you put yourself in our shoes, it’s not very pleasant for everything to be filmed, absolutely everything, and for there to be no privacy. Especially for the top players. Carlos said it the other day, and yes, I think it’s a bit too much. There should be a limit,” Ostapenko stated.

When athletes have to whisper or cover their mouths with towels to discuss match tactics in stadium hallways, the environment has become too intrusive. Players need designated areas to process defeats, manage physical injuries, and prepare mentally without serving as background fodder for reality-style broadcasts.

Alcaraz and Ostapenko Transition to the Clay-Court Grind

While the privacy debate heats up off the court, it is time for the demanding early stages of the European clay-court swing. At the Monte-Carlo Masters, Alcaraz immediately showcased his comfort on the dirt, dismantling Argentina’s Sebastian Baez 6-1, 6-3 in Tuesday’s round of 32. The reigning champion dominated from the baseline and broke Baez five times to advance cleanly in the Principality.

He faces a massive points defense over the next two months, a high-stakes stretch amplified by world No. 2 Jannik Sinner having no points to defend. Sinner is currently ineligible for the start of the clay swing while serving a three-month WADA suspension that ends in May.

Ostapenko is hunting for her own early momentum stationed in Austria as the No. 4 seed at the WTA 500 Upper Austria Ladies Linz Open. Currently ranked No. 23 in the world, the Latvian received a first-round bye and opens her singles campaign on Wednesday against 20-year-old Filipina rising star Alexandra Eala.
