New York Islanders GM Mathieu Darche Reveals Why Patrick Roy Was Fired

Consecutive high-profile terminations have rocked the NHL community as the regular season approaches the end. This week, New York Islanders GM Mathieu Darche took everyone by surprise by firing Patrick Roy with two years still left on his contract.

Darche’s move raised several questions, and the Islanders GM has finally come forward to put those to rest.

Islanders GM Mathieu Darche Addresses Patrick Roy’s Termination

Roy’s stint with the Islanders has not exactly been a failure. The Islanders made the playoffs in the very first season (2023-24) under Roy’s guidance, but fell to the Carolina Hurricanes in Game 5 of the first round of the playoffs. After missing the postseason last season, the team has mounted a comeback this year.

However, what may have prompted Darche to part ways with Roy is a particularly rough four-game stretch that the Islanders lost 20-8 on aggregate. The Islanders enjoyed considerable comfort with their playoff odds, but after the four-game skid, the path ahead is particularly tricky.

The latest 4-3 defeat at the hands of the Hurricanes may have been the tipping point, leading him to show Roy the door, welcoming Pete DeBoer aboard. However, the Islanders GM maintained that Roy continues to command the locker room’s respect.

“Patrick hasn’t lost the room. It wasn’t about [that] guys don’t want to play for him, by any means. Guys respected Patrick a ton. Again, we just wanted to move it forward from where things have been trending,” Darche stated, shedding light on Roy’s sudden termination.

There is sufficient reason to believe that Darche had DeBoer on his radar for quite some time now. The veteran coach has a glowing record, especially when it comes to propelling his teams to deep playoff runs, and that may have motivated the NYI GM to seize the first opportunity he had to acquire DeBoer.

“Once Pete was out there, without going too much into specifics, it really intensified yesterday morning,” Darche clarified. DeBoer, however, had been on the market since last June.

The Islanders’ interest in DeBoer is far from unprecedented. The veteran has been a sought-after coach across the league. He has coached several teams, including the Dallas Stars, the Vegas Golden Knights, and the Florida Panthers. He has reached the Western Conference Finals five of the last seven times as a coach and has also served as an assistant coach to Jon Cooper for Team Canada at the Milan-Cortina Olympics.
