All to Know About Iga Świątek’s Coach Francisco Roig and His Rafael Nadal Connection

Iga Świątek hires former Rafael Nadal coach Francisco Roig hoping to turn her difficult season around ahead of clay courts.

After days of speculation, Iga Świątek has announced that Francisco Roig will be her next head coach. The Spaniard comes with a strong pedigree in tennis, having previously coached Rafael Nadal, Matteo Berrettini, Emma Raducanu, and Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard.

Roig, who helped Nadal win 22 Grand Slam titles, will now hope to help turn things around for Świątek, who has endured a difficult start to the season and recently parted ways with Wim Fissette.

Francisco Roig’s Coaching History Before Joining Iga Świątek

A doubles specialist who won nine career titles during his playing career, Roig found even more success as a coach. The Spaniard joined compatriot Nadal’s team in 2005 and helped him win his first French Open title that year.

The rest was history as Nadal went on a historic run, winning 14 French Open titles, backed by his uncle Toni and Roig, and later by Marc Lopez, Carlos Moya, and Roig.

Roig competed alongside Nadal in doubles, with the duo reaching the quarterfinals of the 2014 Qatar Open.

After a successful run spanning 17 years and 22 Grand Slam titles, Roig and Nadal parted ways in 2022. Roig became Sloane Stephens’ new coach soon after, but that partnership was short-lived. The Spaniard then had a spell with Matteo Berrettini and helped him win three titles despite an injury-curtailed season.

After the two parted ways in October 2024, Roig became Raducanu’s head coach in August 2025. Despite initial promise, the partnership unraveled, and the two decided to split following the Brit’s exit at the 2026 Australian Open. The split occurred due to a philosophical difference over her playing style, as Raducanu later revealed.

“After Australia, me and Francis were talking. We have a great relationship, we could have a really open and honest conversation. He ended up saying, ‘look, I don’t think this is going in the way we both want it to’ so he ended it really,” she said via Sky Sports.

Roig then became Mpetshi Perricard’s coach, but that partnership ended less than a month later when he decided to become Świątek’s new coach.

It will be interesting to see how Świątek’s partnership with Roig goes in the coming months. Roig certainly played a key role in Nadal’s success.

Nadal is someone whom Świątek considers her idol. And she will hope that Roig can have a similar impact on her career after a difficult few months.

A six-time Grand Slam champion, Świątek is undoubtedly one of the best players of the current generation. But she hasn’t made the semifinals of a tournament since September, and Roig will be tasked with changing that as the clay-court season gets underway this month.
