NHL Rumors: Canadiens, Sabres Raise Eyebrows After Maple Leafs Boss Keith Pelley’s Pointed Comments

Keith Pelley’s comments on Canadiens, Sabres prospects spark buzz as Leafs shake up leadership after firing Brad Treliving.

Tension in the Atlantic Division continues to build, and recent comments from Keith Pelley have only intensified the conversation.

The president and CEO of Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment raised eyebrows when he referenced prospects from rival teams during a press conference following the dismissal of Brad Treliving.

Leafs Boss Keith Pelley Sparks Buzz

The Toronto Maple Leafs parted ways with Treliving after a disappointing season that appears likely to end without a playoff berth, something the franchise hasn’t experienced in nearly a decade.

Speaking the following day, Pelley discussed the competitiveness of the Atlantic Division and pointed to the youth movement within both the Buffalo Sabres and the Montreal Canadiens.

“But Buffalo and Montreal have shown that young energetic team, they’re going to be here for a long time. The prospects that they have from Michael Hage from Montreal to Radim Mrtka from Buffalo. They’re strong and they’re going to be strong for a long period of time,” Pelley said.

According to NHL insider Darren Dreger, the remarks didn’t sit well with either Montreal or Buffalo. The reaction stemmed not just from the praise itself, but from the unusual nature of a team executive publicly referencing specific prospects from rival organizations.

Part of the discomfort reportedly stems from the perception that Pelley, who is not typically viewed as a hockey operations executive, would be familiar with those names only through discussions with management, potentially in the context of trade conversations.

Since no deals materialized, the public mention of those players struck some around the league as odd, especially given how closely guarded such discussions usually are.

Major Changes Ahead in Toronto

The comments came amid broader organizational changes in Toronto. Pelley confirmed the club will begin an immediate search for new leadership in hockey operations as the team looks to reset.

He emphasized that the situation was not solely the responsibility of Treliving but said the organization determined a new direction was necessary to pursue its championship goals. The decision signals a significant shakeup as Toronto prepares for the offseason.

“We have all the resources to be successful. But without the right structure, without the right processes in place, without the right culture, without the alignment and the accountability among everybody inside the operation, we will not be successful. That change starts today,” Pelley said.

For now, the Maple Leafs will try to close out the campaign on a stronger note when they face the San Jose Sharks on Thursday, while the ripple effects of Pelley’s comments continue to circulate around the division.
