Reaching the Final Four of the NCAA Tournament is challenging because many factors influence each team every year. These include their regular-season records, the selection committee’s seedings, and the likelihood of upsets during the tournament.
Some programs have defied these trends by consistently reaching the Final Four and making a lasting impact on college basketball history. Here are the top five men’s college basketball programs with the most Final Four appearances in March Madness history.
5 Men’s College Basketball Programs With the Most Final Four Appearances
1. North Carolina Tar Heels
Final Four Appearances: 21 (1946, 1957, 1967, 1968, 1969, 1972, 1977, 1981, 1982, 1991, 1993, 1995, 1997, 1998, 2000, 2005, 2008, 2009, 2016, 2017, 2022)
North Carolina is the only program with over 20 Final Four appearances. It is the only NCAA Division I team to reach the Final Four at least once in each of the nine decades from the 1940s to the 2020s.
Eleven of the Final Four appearances were under legendary Tar Heels head coach Dean Smith, and his former assistant coach, Roy Williams, continued his legacy by helping UNC secure five Final Four berths. Bill Guthridge made it to two Final Fours, while Ben Carnevale and Frank McGuire each reached one. The last time North Carolina advanced to that stage was in 2022 under former head coach Hubert Davis.
T-2. Duke Blue Devils
Final Four Appearances: 18 (1963, 1964, 1966, 1978, 1986, 1988, 1989, 1990, 1991, 1992, 1994, 1999, 2001, 2004, 2010, 2015, 2022, 2025)
Duke and North Carolina could never be separated, as they symbolized consistency, especially from the 1980s to the 2000s, when the rivals were fixtures in most NCAA Tournaments and advanced deep into March Madness.
Mike Krzyzewski led the Blue Devils through successful eras from 1980 to 2022, appearing in 13 Final Fours and winning five national titles. Vic Bubas guided Duke to three Final Fours in 1963, 1964, and 1966, while Bill Foster and Jon Scheyer each took the Blue Devils to one Final Four in 1978 and 2025, respectively.

T-2. UCLA Bruins
Final Four Appearances: 18 (1962, 1964, 1965, 1967, 1968, 1969, 1970, 1971, 1972, 1973, 1974, 1975, 1976, 1995, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2021)
Most of UCLA’s Final Four appearances occurred during the 1960s and 1970s, when legendary head coach John Wooden led the team. Wooden guided the Bruins to a dozen Final Four appearances and won 10 national championships. Gene Bartow succeeded Wooden in 1976 and reached the Final Four that season.
Jim Harrick ended UCLA’s 19-year Final Four drought when his team reached the tournament in 1995 and went on to win the program’s 11th national championship. Ben Howland brought some success to UCLA in the late 2000s, guiding the team to three consecutive Final Four appearances from 2006 to 2008. Current head coach Mick Cronin led UCLA to its most recent Final Four appearance in 2021.
4. Kentucky Wildcats
Final Four Appearances: 17 (1942, 1948, 1949, 1951, 1958, 1966, 1975, 1978, 1984, 1993, 1996, 1997, 1998, 2011, 2012, 2014, 2015)
Kentucky has reached the Final Four in seven different decades from the 1940s to the 2010s, led by five top-tier head coaches. Legendary Kentucky coach Adolph Rupp began the Wildcats’ steady journey to the Final Four, helping the team make six appearances and win four national titles.
Joe B. Hall guided Kentucky to three Final Four appearances in 1975, 1978, and 1984, winning the title in 1978. Rick Pitino helped the Wildcats return to the Final Four after a nine-year absence in 1993. Pitino led two Final Four teams in 1996 and 1997, with the 1996 team capturing the national championship.
Tubby Smith replaced Pitino after he left to coach the Boston Celtics. He made his only Final Four appearance in 1998, winning the national title.
It took 13 years for Kentucky to return to the Final Four under John Calipari. Calipari then reached three more Final Fours in 2012, 2014, and 2015, the last time the Wildcats advanced that far.
