Alex Ovechkin Meets Serendipity in Michael Jordan-Esque Effort to Sink Utah Mammoth With Hatty

Alex Ovechkin scores his 34th career hat trick against the Utah Mammoth, surpassing Brett Hull's historic record at age 40.

At 40 years old, Alex Ovechkin continues to defy time, and on a memorable night in Salt Lake City, he delivered a performance that felt like a collision of sports history.

The Washington Capitals captain powered his team to a 7-4 win over the Utah Mammoth with a hat trick that echoed a legendary moment from another sport.

Alex Ovechkin Channels Michael Jordan With Stunning Hat Trick Against Utah Mammoth

Ovechkin scored twice in the second period before sealing the game with an empty-net goal, his 34th career hat trick. The timing of the final tally made the moment even more remarkable.

He completed the hat trick with just 5.2 seconds remaining at the Delta Center, the same building where Michael Jordan famously hit his championship-clinching shot with 5.2 seconds left in Game 6 of the 1998 NBA Finals.

The empty-netter not only secured the victory but felt like a symbolic “mic-drop” moment in a venue already etched in sports lore. It also added another milestone to Ovechkin’s remarkable résumé. He has now recorded three-goal games against 21 different franchises, surpassing Brett Hull for the most in NHL history.

“I think (in the) second period we played solid,” Ovechkin said. “We controlled the puck. We did exactly what we needed to (in the) offensive zone, and you can see like Duhaime, (Wilson), those guys set the tone.”

The performance also marked Ovechkin’s second hat trick of the season. He became just the third player in NHL history to record multiple hat tricks at age 40 or older, joining Gordie Howe and Johnny Bucyk.

Ovechkin is once again closing in on the 30-goal mark, which would make it his 20th season reaching that milestone, a level of consistency rarely seen in hockey. For comparison, Wayne Gretzky scored just 9 goals in his final season at age 38.

Capitals head coach Spencer Carbery praised his captain’s impact, saying, ” [Ovechkin] gets going in the second period, scores a couple of big goals for us. We grab a little momentum and we build off that…”

“Obviously just amazing at what he does tonight for our group. You could feel it on the bench, the confidence that builds when a few go in the back of the net for us,” he added.

The victory keeps Washington’s playoff hopes alive as they chase the final wild-card spot in the Eastern Conference.

The Capitals will look to carry that momentum into their next matchup against the Vegas Golden Knights on Saturday.
