NHL World Waits With Bated Breath for News on Sidney Crosby’s Unfortunate Injury

Sidney Crosby unexpectedly exited Thursday's game against the Senators, leaving the Pittsburgh Penguins awaiting a critical update.

Concern quickly spread across the hockey world Thursday night after Sidney Crosby left the game unexpectedly, leaving fans and analysts waiting anxiously for an update.

The Pittsburgh Penguins managed to secure a 4-3 shootout win over the Ottawa Senators, but the focus immediately shifted to their captain’s status.

What We Know About Crosby’s Injury Against the Senators

The exact reason for Crosby’s departure wasn’t immediately clear. He started the second period, but after just one shift, he suddenly headed down the tunnel and back to the Penguins’ locker room.

A hit along the boards from Nick Cousins is believed to be the likely cause of his early exit. Shortly after, the Penguins announced that Crosby would not return to the game, though no additional details were provided.

The veteran captain finished the night with only 6:39 of ice time and posted a +1 rating.

The situation raised even more concern, given Crosby’s recent injury history. He had just returned from an MCL sprain suffered during the Olympic quarterfinals after an awkward collision with Radko Gudas.

That injury forced him to miss Canada’s final two games, including the gold-medal loss to the United States. Thursday marked only his fifth game back following the Olympic break.

The uncertainty surrounding Crosby’s departure prompted a range of reactions, with several analysts offering different interpretations of what might have happened.

Dr. Harjas Grewal raised concerns about a potential head injury, saying, “Wonder if Crosby is in concussion protocol. Not 100% clear but believe his head hits the glass and he obviously has a history. Can’t put a firm timeline on concussions but hopefully a short term absence.”

Penguins beat writer Josh Yohe suggested that the hit from Cousins may have been the moment Crosby got injured, saying, “Looks like this is where Sid got hurt.”

Meanwhile, NHL analyst Brian Metzer pointed to another angle, saying, “Another suspected cause of injury to Sid. We speculated during the intermission report about the leg contact with Cozens… Ironically, another Cousins could be the cause.”

reporter Taylor Haase also shared an update, saying, “Looked like his left leg. Not the Olympic leg. Still, not good obviously.” That comment further fueled speculation, emphasizing that even if it wasn’t the same leg as his previous injury, the situation remained concerning.

Together, the mixed reactions underscored how unclear the situation was, leaving fans and analysts waiting for an official update from the Penguins.

Despite the scare, Pittsburgh still came away with the win, moving up to second place in the Metropolitan Division. The Penguins will now turn their attention to a matchup against the Dallas Stars on Saturday, though all eyes remain on whether their captain will be available.
