Coco Gauff’s Pursuit of Miami Final Puts Iga Świątek’s Ranking in Jeopardy

Coco Gauff's Miami Open run puts Iga Swiatek’s world No. 3 ranking in jeopardy following the Pole's early second-round exit.

Iga Świątek would hope that Coco Gauff doesn’t beat Karolína Muchová in their Miami Open semifinal later on Thursday. The Pole’s grasp on the World No. 3 spot in the WTA Rankings is slipping after her early elimination from the Miami Open.

Świątek will now find herself cheering for Muchová in the Miami Open semifinals on Thursday.

Another Low Looms For Iga Świątek Amid Coco Gauff’s Miami Run

Gauff has enjoyed a stunning run at the Miami Open and is now looking to make her first final at the WTA 1000 tournament. She will face Muchová on Thursday, and the winner will go on to face Aryna Sabalenka or Elena Rybakina in the title decider on Saturday.

Meanwhile, Świątek suffered an early exit at the Miami Open as she lost in the second round to compatriot Magda Linette. The 6-1, 5-7, 3-6 defeat means that the six-time Grand Slam champion will lose 150 points when the rankings are next updated.

That would take her to 7,263 points, with Gauff set to move to 7,278 points if she manages to win her semifinal.

Świątek, who was the World No. 2 going into the Sunshine Double, also had a similar tumble down the rankings last summer. She slipped to World No. 8 in the middle of June 2025. But her Wimbledon triumph helped her climb back up the charts.

Świątek’s 2026 Results and Next Tournament

The 2026 season has certainly not gone according to plan for Świątek so far. While the 24-year-old helped Poland win the United Cup to start the year strong, she fell in straight sets to eventual champion Rybakina in the quarterfinals of the Australian Open.

More misery then followed in Doha, where she was beaten by Maria Sakkari in the third round.

Looking to turn things around during the Sunshine Double, Świątek enjoyed a strong start at Indian Wells. But her run ended at the quarterfinals against Elina Svitolina, who won in three sets.

Świątek’s run in Miami then ended at the first time of asking, and she moved swiftly to part ways with her coach, Wim Fissette, following her second-round exit.

Next up for Świątek is the Tennis Grand Prix in Stuttgart in mid-April, which will mark the start of the clay-court swing for her. The four-time French Open winner considers clay her strongest surface, and will be eager to use it to turn her form around.

In the meantime, Świątek will look to recharge her batteries and find a new coach after a draining start to the season.
